Art 2: Intermediate Homework assignments First quarter All assignments are to be done in your sketchbook and should take 30-45 minutes to complete per week. NO homework will be taken late unless there is an excused absence on Friday. Assignments are due every Friday. Art 2 HW 1: Favorite cartoon In your sketchbook, draw your favorite childhood cartoon character, taking up most of the page. Color the character appropriately with colored pencils. Write the title of the show or book on the page. (If you don't remember, ask your primary caregiver! :) Art 2 HW 2: 3-word collage In your sketchbook, create a collage centered around three words that you choose to describe yourself. The collage must take up the whole page and may include graphite pencil, colored pencil, marker, or ink drawings and magazine clippings. The images should relate to the three words and tie them together. Use a glue stick to adhere cut-outs smoothly and completely. Use balance and contrast to create a pleasing composition. Art 2 HW 3: Whale In your sketchbook, draw a whale that is based on a real species - no cartoons please. Examples: blue whale, right whale, humpback, etc. Draw your whale with a realistic outline, and then decorate it with a tribal pattern that you create or borrow from an indigenous culture. You may leave the whale black and white or add color if you wish. Art 2 HW 4: Moai head In your sketchbook, draw a realistic Moai head by referring to the image on the handout. Then give the statue some modern accessories to update his look. Draw a simple setting for the Moai – you can place him on a grassy hillside (like on Easter Island) or somewhere else if you prefer. Make sure to shade in the whole drawing with 5 different values (shades of graphite.) Use your imagination! The more unexpected, the better. Art 2 HW 5: Aboriginal design Choose an aboriginal design from those offered in class and color it using the color scheme of your choice. Use fine tip markers and follow the patterns in the design. If you prefer, you may color it with colored pencils. This will be used to decorate your 3-ring binder. Art 2 HW 6: Hawaiian deity (Akua) For this week's homework, research one of these Hawaiian goddesses: Haumea (goddess of fertility and childbirth, mother of the two following) Pele (goddess of fire, lightning, wind and volcanoes) Poli'ahu (goddess of ice and snow) or Na-Maka (goddess of the sea) Or choose one of these Hawaiian gods: B'ngudja (god of sharks) Kanaloa (god of the sea) Kane (god of light) or Ku (god of war) Draw a depiction of one of these deities and color it in with colored pencils. Add symbols appropriate to the deity, like mangoes and flowers; lava and flames; snow and ice; staff and spear, etc. At the bottom, write a brief description of what this deity is known for (their legend, what they did in Hawaii.) Art 2 HW 7: Amusement park ride You have been employed by a large amusement park to create a new ride that will thrill its visitors. The engineers will design the track, but you have to come up with a theme. Will it be wild? breath-taking? suspenseful? terrifying? The choice is up to you. Think of a name and picture logo to describe the ride. Draw them in your sketchbook and color with markers or pencils. Add any other descriptive details you want to explain what the ride will be like. Write at the bottom which theme park the ride will be in. Art 2 HW 8: Pumpkin Draw a realistic pumpkin using your sketching pencils and a blending stick. It should take up about half of the page. Your goal is to make it look three-dimensional and have the sections look rounded by alternating light and dark shading. A handout will be given with examples of pumpkin drawings. Finally, add a stem and piece of vine tendril, and give it a shadow at the bottom. Art 2 HW 9: Jack o’ Lantern Draw a large pumpkin outline on your sketchbook paper and this time concentrate on the Jack o ‘Lantern design. Use light shading inside the design and darker shading on the pumpkin to make it look like a candle is shining from the inside. Draw the pumpkin on a porch or stair step.
