Introduction
1.1
Background of the Study
Modern public relations practitioners are facing more difficulties and
challenges as information speed and globalization alter the pace and landscape
of the profession. Understanding the traditional social culture might still be one
of the most difficult challenges for public relations practitioners. In addition to
cultural challenges, public relations practitioners are facing technological
challenges as well. While organizations, ranging from production service to
technology, are adopting websites, public relations are a particularly important
consideration for organizations as they begin to serve their various
constituencies.
Public relations has demonstrated to be especially vital for broadcast
corporations given the extremely competitive media environment. The purpose
of this thesis is to explore and compare web-based public relations
strategies
in coping with various publics of an organization.
Public relations can be defined as the deliberate planned and sustained
effort to establish and maintain mutual understanding between an organization
and its publics.
Therefore, publics relations helps in maintaining mutual understanding
between an organization and its publics.

Statement of the Problem
This describes what is involved in coping with the various publics of an
organization.

Public relations is not the same as Personnel or advertisement in an
organization, hence we shall examine the relevance of public relations to an
organization and the challenges faced in coping with the various publics of an
organization.

Objective of the Study
The following are the objectives of this research work;
 To know what it entails in coping with the various publics of an
organization;
 To know the importance of public relations to an organization;
 To know the misconceptions about public relations;
 To ascertain the degree of the publics perception of public relations;
 To determine the tools available to the public relations manager in coping
with the various publics of an organization, using BCOS Ibadan as a case
study

Significance of the Study
The research work will help the public relations manager know how to
cope with the various publics of an organization so as to sustain the image of
organization.

Rationale of the Study
We must take note of the fact that no organization can function
effectively in terms of relating to its publics without the public relations
department. Thus, coping with various publics is an integral part and duty of the
public relations manager.

Scope of the Study
This work focuses on the public relations and various publics of an
organization especially Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS).
Due to the large geography of the country coupled with time and financial
constraints, the focus of this research will be to use the data obtained to
generalize the results obtained.

Definition of Terms
Publics: Relating to or concerning the people at large or all members of a
community.
Public Relations: Is the deliberate planned and sustained efforts to establish
and maintain mutual understanding between an organization and its publics.
Organization: Group of people identified by a shared interest or purpose.
Cope: To deal successfully with a difficult problem or situation
