MEE 3024 Lab #1
Measuring Stress-strain Properties and Compression testing of Materials
Procedure and assignment are discussed below.
1. Obtain Load-Stroke curves for each material provided (aluminum alloy and nylon)
- Data for load-stroke curves are obtained by conducting compression of 2 cylindrical
specimens. Flat platens will be mounted on the hydraulic testing machine and used to
perform the tests. Compress both specimens to achieve a 25 percent reduction in height.
2. Analysis of mechanical properties
For this part, use of a spreadsheet and graphing program is useful.
- Using the compression test data, obtain the elastic modulus and Yield Stress (using the
0.2% offset method) for both materials
- Find the parameters K, n for the constitutive equation   K  using the compression
data from the aluminum cylinder.
n
- Describe the calculation procedures that were used in detail
3. Generate stress-strain curves
- Generate engineering & true stress-strain curves for both materials using an average of
the values obtained
- Describe the calculation procedures that were used to produce each stress-strain curve
4. Discussion
- Describe the basic microstructural features of the materials used.
- Consider the shape of the curves between the 2 different materials. Comment on why
they are the same or different.
- Consider the stress-strain curves for each material. Comment on why the engineering and
true curves are the same or different. Discuss briefly any assumptions that were used to
calculate each curve.
