Defining Information Governance
•
ARMA: A strategic framework composed of standards, processes,
roles, and metrics that hold organizations and individuals
accountable to create, organize, secure, maintain, use, and dispose
of information in ways that align with and contribute to the
organization's goals.
•
Wikipedia: Set of multi-disciplinary structures, policies, procedures,
processes and controls implemented to manage information at an
enterprise level, supporting an organization's immediate and future
regulatory, legal, risk, environmental and operational requirement.
Encompasses more than traditional records management…
Incorporates privacy attributes, electronic discovery requirements,
storage optimization, and metadata management.
•
Gartner: The specification of decision rights and an accountability
framework to encourage desirable behavior in the valuation,
creation, storage, use, archival and deletion of information. It
includes the processes, roles, standards and metrics that ensure the
effective and efficient use of information in enabling an organization
to achieve its goals.
•
Richard Medina: Information governance is a part of corporate
governance, and focuses on managing an organization’s
information (content) in order to increase its value and reduce its
cost and risk to the organization.

Defining the IG Professional
•
IG professionals:
o Have a strategic view of the organization and deep understanding of its
business, financial, and technology acumen and possess the ability to
engage & collaborate with a variety of stakeholders to ensure all needs for
the organization are met.
o Understand that information assets must be governed in a way that costs
only as much as necessary to achieve the entity's goals while mitigating risk
to the desired level.
o Must competently articulate problems and propose viable solutions in terms
that create a compelling reason for the organization to act.
•
Bottom Line:
o Cost savings and efficiency drive the organization to implement solutions
and the benefit of everything we do must quantified in monetary terms and
in relationship to mission and goals.
o We must implement tools and processes that effectively address
compliance and risk objectives and also achieve quantifiable and
verifiable cost and efficiency benefits.
•
Do you know your organization's mission? How do you support the
organization’s efforts to fulfill that mission?

Changing the Paradigm
•
Although a critical component of information governance strategy
implementation, “RIM 101” is only part of the solution
•
Information Governance is a multi-discipline organization-wide strategy
requiring a high degree of collaboration with key business partners at
the highest levels of the organization
•
We need to become “Program” Managers as opposed to a “Records”
Managers, whether we are focused on organizational strategy or
tactical implementation
•
We must “take a seat at the table” which requires that we develop
critical business skills and relationships and understand how information
governance supports the goals of the business
•
Business units must take on records and information management
functions – A centralized approach to RIM tactical operations is no
longer feasible

Certification & Training
•
CRM in Relation to IGP
o A CRM is a RIM professional with expertise in a very complex field with
strategic importance that most business people do not understand.
o The CRM is uniquely positioned to become an Information Governance
Professional (IGP) and has the most relevant training
o The CRM designation requires a significant amount of knowledge and
experience and has been established for over 40 years
o Information Governance (IG) is a strategy developed by a multidisciplinary team representing all major business units of the organization
o IG strategy provides a common framework to guide business unit
tactical/process planning & design that meets the information
management goals of all stakeholders
o The IGP certification is a new designation developed by ARMA
International
o The IGP is responsible for multi-discipline, organization-wide strategy that
requires a high degree of collaboration with key business partners at the
highest levels of the organization
o Is the CRM being replaced by the IGP? ABSOLUTELY NOT!
