Accelerated Reader
A Windermere Elementary
PTA Program
Motivate your child to read
through a program they’ll love!
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a
supplemental reading program at
Windermere Elementary School
available to all independent readers.
AR offers students incentives to
read and reinforces reading
comprehension throughout the
school year in a fun,
individually-paced format.
How does Accelerated Reader
work? Four simple steps!
1
Students read an AR book.
Students choose books at their appropriate
reading levels and read them independently
and at their own pace. Visit
www.arbookfind.com for book titles.
2
Students Take a Quiz.
Students take multiple-choice reading
comprehension quizzes for their books
independently on a computer at school.
Points are earned for correct answers. (For
any credit, students must answer 60% of
questions correctly.)
3
4
Points are accumulated and prizes awarded
As AR points are earned, the student’s
teacher will sign off on the level. Once the
level has been initialed by the teacher,
students can redeem prizes every Tuesday
and Thursday morning from 8:15-8:45.
Progress is Shared with You.
Renaissance Home Connect offers parents
the ability to login in to see not only all of
the books your child has read but how they
scored on each quiz. With this information
you can help to monitor that your child is
reading books that are on their level or if
they need to work to challenge themselves a
bit more. With parents, teachers and
students working together the possibilities
are endless! (flyer was sent home)

What books are on the
Accelerated Reader list?
Accelerated Reader
Point Thresholds
If it’s in print, it’s most likely on the AR list.
The list of AR books is endless. Chances are,
your child has read many of them already!
Books can be found in Windermere’s Media
Center and you may also have books at home
that are already on the list.
To search the AR catalog and see if the book
has a corresponding AR quiz, visit
www.arbookfind.com or look on the Pierce
Media Center website.
Note: Quizzes cannot be accessed from a
home computer. All quizzes must be taken on
a school computer.
What are Lexile levels?
AR
A popular method used by

is a valuable tool for teachers,
parents, and students. It serves 1.4

two unique functions: it is the
measure of how difficult a text is 1.6

two ways: taking a school2.3
administered SRI (Scholastic

Reading Inventory) test, which is 2.6
specifically designed to measure 2.7

Lexile or reading ability OR by

taking a standardized reading test 3.2

which converts the reader’s

Ways To Read
AR will ask your child how each book was read.
Here are the options for reading:
RT-Read To
This includes picture books and chapter books
that you read aloud to your child. The parent
does the reading and the child is simply
listening to the story.
RW-Read With
This choice is for books read with your first
grader. You read a little, they read a little. You
can help with many of the words but both you
and your child are reading.
RI-Read Independently
This means your child was able to read the book
by himself with little to no assistance from you.
