For younger students Breakthrough combines rigorous academics with a broad range of mind-expanding electives, extra-curricular activities and experiences in an environment of mutual respect, cross-cultural awareness, high moral values and -- most importantly – fun. The program builds self-esteem, resilience for overcoming challenges, and the confidence to set high goals. By integrating service learning for older students with academics for younger students, the Breakthrough experience creates a home-grown cadre of future leaders with the potential to achieve their own dreams, to change the life trajectories of their families, and to inspire pride in the community at large. College Summit College Summit trains principals, teachers, and the most influential students in the school to embark every student on the path to higher education. These “Panther for a Day/Ragin’ Bull Pride” visits will connect content that students are learning in high school courses with an individualized college experience. For example students in the Culinary track would visit the Chapman School of Hospitality and Tourism. Students in the medical magnet would visit the STAR simulation center at the College of Nursing. Black Male College Explorer Program (Year Round with Summer Component)-STEM focused- Fifteen local middle and high schools, including Liberty City based schools, participate in the program coordinated by FMU. Supportive services such as tutoring, mentoring, career exploration and planning, personal development seminars, college tours, cultural field trips are provided year round with a highly concentrated developmental experience during the summer. More than 90% of Explorers go on to college.
