PDAA Chair MA announced that she is standing down as Chair of the PDAA and that Cllr Sue McDonald has agreed to take over the role. On behalf of the PDAA, IS thanked MA for her hard work and dedication during her time as Chair. KG suggested that all Plymouth City Councillors should attend a Dementia Friends Information Session. All present agreed this was a good idea. IS asked if Rachel Silcock is involved in the process of revising Plymouth City Council’s Dementia Strategy. Suggested that Keith Bucknall should attend the next PCC Dementia steering group meeting. KM will speak to RS about both points. IS reported that Peter Vosper has requested Dementia Friends Awareness Information Sessions for his staff. Dates will be confirmed shortly. 2. Dementia Friends 3. PCC Dementia Strategy 4. Vospers 5. Dementia Friendly Wales IS has visited Wales to advise the country on becoming ‘Dementia Friendly’. IS reported on behalf of Plymouth University IS been asked by Dame Suzi Leather (Chair of the Plymouth Fairness Commission) to write a paper on ‘what is unfair about dementia care.’ Dame Leather may well be contacting members of the PDAA for their feedback on the same issue. Sarah Watson-Fisher (Health Education England), would like arrange a meeting with members of the PDAA to discuss progress and joint working within nursing training programmes. IS announced formation of Leadership Challenger Group for the South and South West of England. The Group includes leaders in the area of health and social care. This group will report back to Central Government on issues relating to Dementia Care. Plymouth University now has over 300 staff who have attended Dementia Friends Awareness Information Sessions. The Senior Management Group will also be attending Dementia Awareness Sessions. IS announced that Dr Doug Brown, Leader of Research and development for the Alzheimer’s Society will be attending the next Plymouth University Dementia Research Group meeting on 29th July. IS announced that the INTEREG funding bid was unsuccessful. He is in the process of submitting a consortium bid for approx. 5 million, so that Plymouth can adopt a consortium approach to Dementia, in key with what Arrange meeting with PDAA IS, KM IS asks for members of PDAA to email him with any thoughts on the practice and process of the Leadership Group. ian.sherriff@plymouth.ac.uk All PDAA members as applicable 10. EI reported on behalf of Age UK Plymouth 11. KWM reported on behalf of Cann House 12. SB reported on behalf of Wolferstans Solicitors Stirling and Bradford Universities have done. Reported that Age UK Plymouth are still struggling to reach ‘older carers’ (over 65s), but they have been working with GP practices and wards at Mount Gould Hospital to try and reach this cohort. Commented that she did not receive much response from the Care Home managers at the Dignity in Care Homes Forum on 26 June regarding membership of the PDAA and Dementia Friends/Champions. Announced the PDAA Dementia Awareness being organised by Wolferstans. The event will take place on 8th August 2013, from 15:00-19:00, at Plymouth Guildhall. KWM SB will email around a flyer advertising the event SB IS requested that RB asks RB, Kathy Wolferstans are sponsoring the Dementia Friendly City Better Business Breakfast event on 17 July, organised by Plymouth Chamber of Commerce and Industry. IS, MM and KM thanked Wolferstans for their support of the event. 13. RB reported on behalf of Alzheimer’s Society Plymouth Raised concern over a lack of signposting before and after a person receives a diagnosis of a dementia. Commented that there is still not enough knowledge of support services available and there is often a time delay in people being informed of what support is available to them. Roundtable discussion re. above; also suggested that GPs are not always telling patients about the Dementia Support Service. Kathy Milosevic to write to the CCG informing them of what support services the Alzheimer’s Society provide. Milosevic IS requested that KG emails him and KM details of what Derriford Hospital has been doing for Dementia care so he can highlight this at the next Prime Minister’s Dementia Champions meeting. KG Announced formation of a Service Users Panel, comprising of people with a dementia. RB asks all PDAA members to contact her if they know of a person who might be interested in joining the panel: Ruth.Bishop@alzheimers.org.uk 01752 608900 RB reported that she and Nicole Quinn ran a Dementia Fiends Awareness Information Session at Bovey Castle for 56 people. The attendees included local business people and very successful. 14. TB reported on behalf of Sunshine Care 15. KG reported on behalf of Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust TB reported that she and KH are continuing to run Dementia Friends Information Sessions for staff and outside organisations. They have many contacts in the local community and have been asked to speak about Dementia Awareness at Plymstock United Church. They have also been asked to provide Dementia Friends Information Sessions at four sheltered housing schemes. They are working towards promoting Dementia Friends Information Sessions within the Chinese community in Plymouth. Reported back on Standards in Dementia Care Workshop held on 6th June 2013. Derriford Hospital now has over 200 Dementia Champions working on its wards. Derriford Hospital has introduced ‘Dementia Friendly Ward’ Plaques at the entrances to several wards. 16. MM reported on behalf of Plymouth Chamber of Commerce& Industry 17. FM reported on behalf of Focus Oral Health CIC Informed that over 50 delegates have confirmed their attendance for the Dementia Friendly City Better Business Breakfast event on 17 July. Discussed the training being provided by Focus Oral Health CIC, which includes explaining dental care in laymen’s terms for a care /care home setting. Announced the Conference of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (15-16 Nov, Birmingham) entitled ‘Looking Beyond the Obvious.’ Conference themes include the impact of Alzheimer’s on dental care. 18. Keith Bucknall reported on behalf of the PDAA Carers’ Group 19. Round table discussion regarding Carer’s telephone assessments MA suggested that FM writes a letter to the conference organisers explaining that it would be a good idea to include other forms of dementia in addition to Alzheimer’s. FM MA requests that KM contact Craig McArdle, Head of Joint Strategic Commissioning, to ask for further information on the process involved with the 10 minute telephone assessment. KM Reported that two new representatives have joined the PDAA Carers’ Group. KB has been networking with the Anglican, Methodist and Catholic Churches to discuss the creation of Dementia Friendly Churches in communities. KB announced that he has been accepted to study for an MSc in Social Research with Plymouth University on Spirituality and Dementia. EI raised the issue that there are still on-going problems with the Carer’s ’10 minute telephone assessment’ through Plymouth City Council. FM proposed that there needs to be clarification from PCC regarding: are these assessments offered or do people have to ask? What questions are asked? What happens after the 20. 21. assessment? IS requested that copies of the winning poster images from the Stoke Damerel Community College Dementia Awareness Project are displayed in the Council Chamber and on the ‘Big Screen’ in Armanda Way on Friday 2nd August, to promote the launch of Plymouth ‘working to become a Dementia Friendly’. MA raised that she has been contacted by someone asking if the PDAA would like to advertise in an a ‘Directory of Services’ published on behalf of Plymouth Hospitals Trust. There would be a charge of £350 for this advisement. MA asks for agreement from those present for her to refuse this offer. IS stated that other organisations offer the PDAA free advertising space, so we would only agree is this advertisement was printed for free. All agree.
