Adjectives
 An article is a kind of adjective. There are three
articles: a, an, the.
DAY 1
 A and an are indefinite articles because they
refer to a noun in general. Use a before a noun
that begins with a consonant. Use an before a
noun that begins with a vowel. I saw a squirrel
and an owl.
 The is a definite article because it refers to a
specific noun. The orange cat is a tabby.

Demonstrative Adjectives
 This, that, these, and those are demonstrative adjectives.
They point out people, places, things, or ideas.
 This story is exciting.
 These books are from the library.
 Demonstrative adjectives can also take the place of nouns.
When they do, they become demonstrative pronouns.

 This is an exciting story.
 These are library books.

Using Colons and
Semicolons
 Use a colon after the salutation in a business
letter. To Whom It May Concern:

 Use a colon to introduce a list of items. We grow
four herbs: basil, parsley, mint, and cilantro.
 Use a semicolon to join together two
independent clauses – that is, two clauses that
could be sentences on their own. The semicolon
takes the place of a comma and a conjunction.
