Student Leader Development Guide
Overview
Student learning, growth and development are integral components of the student
experience within the Student Leadership and Involvement Center. Recognizing that
learning exists throughout involvement opportunities, the Student Leadership and
Involvement Center (SLIC) has established Student Leader Development Guide, which
is used to facilitate student learning and development through one-on-one advising.
Process
The Student Leader Development Guide is a joint effort between student leaders and
their advisor. Each student will complete a questionnaire to assess his or her leadership
capacity. With their advisor, they will review responses and create a leadership
development action plan to increase growth and development each semester and
throughout the academic year.
Advisors Steps
1. Review the SLIC Student Learning Objectives with your student so they become
familiar with the objectives and their criteria.
2. Discuss the Student Leader Development Guide to the student(s) you advise.
Provide each student with a copy of the questionnaire and ask him or her to
complete and return the questionnaire.
3. Review student responses. Using the scoring key on the advisor questionnaire
copy, indicate the results of your student(s) with the Student Leader
Development Guide Rubric.
4. Discuss the results and rubric with your student advisee during an advising
conversation. Following the conversation, each student should complete the
Student Leader Development Action Plan to be discussed at a future meeting.
Revisit the plan continuously throughout the semester.
Students Leader Steps
1. Complete to the Student Leader Development Questionnaire
2. Review results with your Advisor
3. Develop a tentative Action Plan prior to meeting with your advisor
4. In collaboration with your advisor, develop the Student Leader Development
Action Plan, establishing goals and milestones to measure your progress.
Advising and Development
The Student Leader Development Guide is intended to inform advising conversations
throughout the semester and year. Progress should be reviewed at the end of each
semester, noting achievement and continued areas for growth.
Assessment
At the end of each semester, each advisor will submit scores for their students,
identifying common themes and measured growth to the SLIC Assessment Coordinator.
