They all live in the New York zoo. One day Martin, the zebra, sees some penguins escape from the zoo and take the road to their natural environment. On the evening of his birthday party he suggests following the penguins’ example to his friends but they refuse Martin’s proposal, so Martin decides to run away on his own. During the night Alex, the lion, wakes up and realises that his friend has run away. Alex, Melman and Gloria run away from the zoo to find their friend, Martin. They finally find him but the police capture them and imprison them in a ship. Nobody knows where the ship is going to!! Some penguins rescue the four after freeing themselves from the cages where they are imprisoned; they tie up the captain and take possession of the ship. The ship makes a sudden movement and all the boxes fall into the water and the four friends find themselves on the beach of the island of Madagascar. After a short time Martin and Alex start to quarrel and decide to divide the beach into two parts. The four friends are then kidnapped by the inhabitants of the island, the Lemurs, who are scared of them because they think they are bad animals, however later they realise that the four are good animals and so they become friends. One day Alex, the lion, is really hungry and he “sees” steaks instead of his friends. He bites Martin who becomes scared of him and runs away. Alex is afraid he will hurt his friends so he hides in a cave where he can’t see them but Martin goes to tell him that they will always be his friends. When the hyenas attack the lemurs Alex rescues them and to celebrate the event they all meet on the beach. COMMENT The film wants to underline how important it is for the animals to live in their natural environment. It also highlights the strong friendship that keeps them together and the fact that by helping each other they are able to solve their difficulties. COMMENT : The film wants to tell us that it is necessary for us to trust in ourselves and it’s not necessary to boast to be important .The story is full of moral teachings and is for a young public, but it can make adults laugh, too. The plot is clever and the scenograpy in the style of “The Godfather” The story takes place in a underwater New York coral barrier. There are several references to famous musicals and costumes. Starting from the unlikely names like “Coral-cola” or the singer “Tuna Turner” or the conturbante Lolo a version of the well-known Jessica Rabbit. The film tells the story of Charlie, a boy who lives in poverty and only eats cabbage. In the city where he lives there is the biggest chocolate factory in the world, but at that moment it is closed. Willie Wonker, the owner of the factory, makes wonderful chocolate which is famous all over the world and for this reason Wonker thinks that spies from other chocolate factories will try to steal his recipes. One day Willi Wonker suddenly decides to close the factory but some time later the town’s people see smoke coming from the chimney again and the famous bars of chocolate are in circulation once more. The strange thing is that the workers who worked in the factory qre not called back to work and nobody knows who makes the chocolate. Willie Wonka organises a competition and five golden tickets are put inside the wrappers of five lucky chocolate bars. The five children who find these tickets can visit this special factory and one child will win a special prize. Word of this spreads and everybody buys the chocolate bars in great quantities hoping to find one of the golden tickets inside. Four of the lucky winners are: a fat, greedy German boy called Augustus; an unpleasant and spoilt girl called Veruca; a Karate and bubble gum champion called Violetta and a great war game fan called Mike. Because Charlie is poor he can only have one bar a year, on his birthday. He finally finds the fifth golden ticket, but not in the bar he receives for his birthday but in the one he buys with a coin he finds on the ground. When all five children are inside the factory all the winners, except Charlie, do something silly and so they are eliminated. In the end only Charlie remains and he receives a special present – the chocolate factory!! Comments on: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory • I went with my class to see this film. The film has other main characters apart from Willy Wonker, the owner of the factory. They are children who have good qualities and defects. I don’t identify myself with any of these children because Charlie is too good, although he is very poor he is always kind and thoughtful. I also have this quality but I’m not so kind and thoughtful as Charlie. • Augustus is greedy, rude and loves all types of sweet food. I’m not greedy but I like sweets and chocolate very much. Sometimes I’m a bit rude. • I’m not like Veruca, who is very spoilt and unpleasant. Perhaps some people think I’m unpleasant but I don’t think I’m so nasty as her! • Violetta is more like me because she is competitive and does martial arts like me. I think I am less annoying than her and that I’m less arrogant, too. • Mike is like me too because he is tecnological but he’s also boasts a bit. Anyway I think that if I had gone into that factory I would have been eliminated very quickly but I would have tried to make frineds with Umpa Lumpa. I think I am a mixture of: Charlie: generous and kind Violetta :determined and competetive Mike: tecnological • • • •
