What’s in a Quote?
Prince Escalus tells the families at the end that their feud cost
them the lives of their children. And he, for not putting a stop to it
sooner, lost two relatives (Paris and Mercutio). He notes that they
all are punished (punished, punished).

“Where be these enemies?
Capulet! Montague! / See,
what a scourge is laid upon
your hate, / That heaven
finds means to kill your joys
with love! / And I, for
winking at your discords,
too, / Have lost a brace of
kinsmen. All are punished.”
When Juliet finds Romeo dead, she kisses his lips to get poison
and notices his lips are still warm. This is ironic because she just
missed him alive.

“Poison, I see, hath been
his timeless end. / O
churl! Drunk all, and
left no friendly drop /
To help me after? I
will kiss thy lips. /
Haply some poison yet
doth hang on them / To
make me die with a
restorative. / Thy lips
are warm!”
Lord Capulet’s reaction to Juliet’s death is ironic because the day
before he told her to marry Paris or he would disown her. Now
that she’s gone he realizes how important she was to him. Be
careful what you wish for.

“O child! O child!
My soul, and not
my child! / Dead art
thou, dead! Alack,
my child is dead, /
And with my child
my joys are buried!”
(IV.v.71-73).
As he dies, Mercutio curses
the Montagues and the
Capulets for their feud cost
him his life. Example of foreshadowing.

“A plague o’ both
your houses!”
Friar Laurence comments on
how Romeo falls in and out
of love so quickly. He suggests
to Romeo that it isn’t love yet; he just
finds pretty girls attractive. Romeo is hasty and rash.

“Is Rosaline, that thou didst
love so dear, / So soon
forsaken? Young men’s love
then lies / Not truly in their
hearts, but in their eyes.”

Explaineth the Quoteth
When Romeo sees Juliet the
first time, he instantly fell
in “love” with her and forgot
Rosaline. Hasty and rash actions.

“Did my heart love
till now? Foreswear
is sight! / For I
ne’er saw true beauty
till this night.”
Juliet questions why her new
love has to be a Montague, her
family’s sworn enemy. She thinks
that one of them can drop the family name
so they can be together. Hasty and rash.

“ O Romeo, Romeo!
Wherefore art thou Romeo? /
Deny thy father and refuse
thy name! / Or if thou wilt
not, be but sworn my love, /
And I’ll no longer be a
Capulet.”
Romeo tells Tybalt that one
or both of them must die
to avenge Mercutio’s death.
The feud between their
families led to his demise. Friendship love.

“Either thou, or I, or
both, must go with
him.”
Lord Capulet refuses to
listen to Juliet and threatens
to disown her if she refuses
to marry Paris. Hasty and rash. Doesn’t like to be challenged.

“Look to ‘t, think on ‘t; I do
not jest. / Thursday is near;
lay hand on heart, advise. /
An you be mine, I’ll give you
to my friend; / An you be
not, hang, beg, starve, die in
the streets, / For by my soul,
I’ll ne’er acknowledge thee,
/ Nor what is mine shall
never do thee good.”
When Romeo sees Juliet in the tomb, he notices
that she looks beautiful and her cheeks are still pink. This is
dramatic irony because the audience knows she isn’t dead; in fact,
she is coming out of Friar’s trance.

“O my love! My wife! /
Death, that hath sucked the
honey of thy breath, / Hath
had no power yet upon thy
beauty. / Thou art not
conquered. Beauty’s ensign
yet / Is crimson in thy lips
and in thy cheeks, / And
death’s pale flag is not
advanced there.”
Lady Capulet’s grief over the loss of Juliet is ironic because the
day before she told Juliet to do whatever she wanted because she
was done with her daughter. Lady Capulet could have prevented
tragedy if she would’ve realized how much she loved Juliet the day
before. Be careful what you wish for

“O me, O me! My
child, my only life,
/ Revive, look up, or
I will die with
thee!” (IV.v.19-21).

Foreshadowing in Romeo
and Juliet
Romeo has a dream that he
died and Juliet brought him back
to life with a kiss. This
foreshadows how he will kiss
her later, and she does come
back to life. However, when
she kisses him, he does not.

“I dreamt my lady came and
found me dead-- / Strange
dream that gives a dead man
leave to think!-- / And
breathed such life with kisses
in my lips / That I revived
and was an emperor.”
Romeo has a dream that something
will start that night at the party and
end with his unexpected death. This
foreshadows how he will meet Juliet, and through
a series of many complications, face his untimely death.

“For my mind misgives /
Some consequence, yet
hanging in the stars, / Shall
bitterly begin his fearful
date / With this night’s
revels and expire the term /
Of a despised life, closed in
my breast, / By some vile
forfeit of untimely death.”
Juliet has vision of Romeo
dead in a tomb as he leaves her balcony. This is an
example of foreshadowing because the next time she
sees him he is dead
in the vault.

“O God, I have an illdivining soul! /
Methinks I see thee,
now thou art below, /
As one dead in the
bottom of a tomb. /
Either my eyesight fails,
or thou look’st pale.”
