Introduction of Film Culture Introduction of Film Culture Famous actors & actresses Charlie Chaplin Charlie Chaplin, who died in 1977, is considered one of the greatest and funniest actors in the history of the cinema. During his lifetime, he acted in 13 films, and he wrote, directed and acted in 69 other films. Chaplin was born in London in 1889 and first acted when he was five years old. At the age of eight, he joined a group of child dancers, and at seventeen he set off for the USA with a group of comedy actors. During a second trip to the USA in 1912, and important film director saw Chaplin acting a very funny part in a play. As a result, Chaplin got his first film part in the States. As early as his second film, Chaplin had developed his own manner of acting, the one that was to become world-famous. He wore a small black hat, very wide trousers , a moustache and carried a stick that he swung in the air as he walked. Even his way of walking down the street and turning a corner could be recognized as his own. In less than three months Chaplin acted in 11 films. After a short while he started directing films himself. During his first year, Chaplin acted in 35 films, many of which, he wrote and directed himself. Chaplin’s earliest films were silent, because the equipment for adding sound to films had not yet been developed. The development of films with sound became a problem for Chaplin, as he was uncertain about making films with dialogue. Instead, he continued to make films without dialogue, but he added music, which he wrote himself. Two of his greatest films, “City Lights” and “Modern Times” were of this kind. Chaplin’s later films, however, were not well received. He made only six films between 1940 and 1966 and only the first of these is still popular today. Chaplin lived the last years of his life in Switzerland, where he was buried in 1977. Before he died, he was honored in a number of ways for his contributions to the film industry. Those three little words are the keys to discovering the man who is still considered to be one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. They are also the keys to appreciating his unique ability to bring tears of laughter to our eyes one minute, and tears of understanding the next. Hoffman won a second Academy Award for his riveting portrayal of an autistic(专注自我 而与现实隔绝的)孤独症患者(常 指儿童) savant(专家)in Rain Man in 1988. His performance is again notable not only for his physical transformation, but for his absolute unwillingness to become sentimental. Rain Man also suggests a transition point in screen history. Meryl Streep Biography for Meryl Streep Date of birth (location) 22 June 1949 Summit, New Jersey, USA Birth name Mary Louise Streep Height 5' 6" (1.68 m) Considered by many movie reviewers to be the greatest living film actress, Meryl Streep has been nominated for the Academy Award an astonishing 13 times, and has won it twice. Born Mary Louise Streep in 1949 in Summit, New Jersey, Meryl's early performing ambitions leaned toward the opera. She became interested in acting while a student at Vassar and upon graduation she enrolled in the Yale School of Drama. She gave an outstanding performance in her first film role, Julia (1977), and the next year she was nominated for her first Oscar for her role in The Deer Hunter (1978). She went on to win the Academy Award for her performances in Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), and Sophie's Choice (1982) in which she gave a heart wrenching portrayal of an inmate mother in a Nazi death camp. A perfectionist in her craft and meticulous and painstaking in her preparation for her roles, Meryl turned out a string of highly acclaimed peformances over the next 10 years in great films like Silkwood (1983); Out of Africa (1985); Ironweed (1987); and A Cry in the Dark (1988). Her career declined slightly in the early 1990s as a result of her inability to find suitable parts, but she shot back to the top in 1995 with her performance as Clint Eastwood's married lover in The Bridges of Madison County (1995) and as the prodigal daughter in Marvin's Room (1996). In 1998 she made her first venture into the area of producing, and was the executive producer for the moving ...First Do No Harm (1997) (TV). A realist when she talks about her future years in film, she remarked that "...no matter what happens, my work will stand..." Streep seldom appeared in heavy makeup, yet she looked different in each picture-and sounded different, too, going to great pains to master foreign accents and regional dialects. She won a second Oscar, now as Best Actress, for her portrayal of a Polish woman who survives Nazi persecution during World War 2 in Sophie's Choice (1982), and was nominated for her turns in The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981, appearing as both an actress and the Victorian character she plays), Silkwood (1983, her first workingclass character, a doomed factory employee), Out of Africa (1985, as Danish author Karen Blixen), Ironweed (1987, as Jack Nicholson's boozing partner and fellow vagrant), A Cry in the Dark (1988, as an Australian woman accused of murdering her own baby), and Postcards From the Edge (1990, as the weary actress overshadowed by her overbearing mother). Since then, a more "humanized" Streep has played genteel comedy with Albert Brooks in Defending Your Life (1991) and over-the-top farce opposite Goldie Hawn in Death Becomes Her (1992). In 1994 she tackled her first action film, The River Wild then starred opposite Clint Eastwood in The Bridges of Madison County (1995). Because Meryl Streep can do anything, and do it well, the only question is, what will she do next? Personal quotations: I have always regarded myself as the pillar of my life. The great gift of human beings is that we have the power of empathy. Instant gratification is not soon enough. 作品年表 - Actress • 雷蒙·斯尼奇的不幸历险 Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) • 谍网迷魂 The Manchurian Candidate (2004) • 美国天使 Angels in America (2003) • 时时刻刻 The Hours (2002) • 改编剧本 Adaptation. Born November 12, 1982 ,Brooklyn, New York, U.S. occupation actress Years active 1999---present Anne Hathaway is an American actress. She made her acting debut in the 1999 television series Get Real, but her first prominent role was in Disney's family comedy The Princess Diaries which established her career. She wanted to break the "G-rated" image, and consequently, in 2005 she co-starred in the adult-themed Havoc and Brokeback Mountain, both requiring nude scenes. She credited the decline in her stress level to quitting smoking, but had started again in the wake of her stressful summer and the end of her relationship with Raffaello Follieri(a nobbler). She also declared her return to being a vegetarian.
