NANO-TEACHER’S NOTES
SYNOPSIS
Nano is the story af an alien who comes to planet earth to find out all about humans. He’s fascinated by
everything but doesn’t understand how things work, or what they’re called. Then, he meets Anna, she
decides to teach him about her school day. Nano is very confused as everything is so different to where
he’s from. As the confusion mounts he decides to take Anna to Nanoland so she can see for herself how
different things are. There she sees that everything is the other way round: “No” means “yes”, “red” is
“blue” and “blue” is “red”.
The play touches on the topic of diversity, to show the children that the way they know isn’t the only way.
That people from different places may do things differently.
TRACK 9
CHARACTERS
TRACK 9- CHARACTERS
AIM
To learn the
names, and be
familiar with the
three main
characters in the
play.
WORKSHEET 1
Give the children WORKSHEET 1 and get them to look at the pictures of the
characters. Play TRACK 9 and get the children to point to the character they think
is talking. Cut out the words and names in APPENDIX 1. Give one set to each
group/table of children. Get the children to find the names of the characters and
fill in the missing letters on their worksheets.
AIM
To be familiar with
the vocabulary
used in the play
WORKSHEET 1
Now they can match up the rest of the words from APPENDIX 1 with the pictures
on WORKSHEET 1, filling in the missing letters. When they have finished go through
the objects and ensure that they know how to pronounce them.
GAME
Now in their groups/table they can play a game of “Happy Families”. They need
to cut out all the pictures on WORKSHEET 1 and put them face down on the table
and mix them all up. Then, each child takes 9 cards and keeps them hidden from
the rest of the group. Depending on their level, they need to go round, taking
turns, each asking another child in the group. For example: “Maria, do you have a
sandwich please?”. If the reply is yes, they must pass it over. If they cannot
complete the sentence, they can just use the word; “sandwich”. The game
continues until the first child completes a full set of the 9 different cards. There is a
word search in APPENDIX 2 if you want to reinforce the vocabulary further.
AIM
To tell the time in
English
WORKSHEET 2
Ensure that they children know how to tell the time for times “on the hour” ( 1
o’clock, 3 o’clock etc). You can develop this to include half/quarter past if you
want.
TRACK 10
THE EVERYDAY
SONG
AIM
To understand and
learn “The
Everyday Song”
WORKSHEET 3
Ensure that the children understand the 3 categories, “School”, “Lunch” and
“Play”. They must either draw or write nouns and verbs which they think fit into
each category.

be empty of furniture/children when the actors arrive.
A small table.

General lighting.
The actors need 1 hour to set up the lights, music and sound, and 45 minutes to set down.
GUIDELINES FOR A SUCCESSFUL SHOW
In order for the children to enjoy and follow the play performed in another language, we recommend the
following guidelines:
 Ensure that the students have done at least some preparation from the Workpack, so that they know
who the characters are and are familiar with the story.
To avoid distraction, limit the number of times teachers or students need to enter/leave the room during
the performance.
The students will be asked to be quiet and listen in some moments and asked to participate in others.
Please ask all teachers/monitors/parents present during the session to encourage the students to be a
good audience and respect the actors.
Turn off all mobile phones.
No eating or drinking.
