Coatequitl Description:
Coatequitl provides a safe space in which macehualins (interns) can individually and
collectively develop a sense of identity as people of color. Macehualins (interns) will have practical
situations in which they can apply their leadership and team building skills. The major outcome of
Coatequitl is to create critically conscious individuals through student empowerment and leadership
development, while focusing on retention, in this 2-unit class structure.
The Spring Quarter internship meets EVERY Thursday from 4pm-6pm starting week 1. In
addition to these meetings, you will be expected to contribute hours of volunteer service working with
a component of MEChA Calmécac or a component within MEChA de UCLA.

Hourly Breakdown - Weekly
2 hours internship space per week (Thursdays 4:00 P.M- 6:00 P.M Mandatory)
1 hour workgroup/component meetings per week
Dependent on component - Flexible
1 hour administrative work and office support (includes work taken outside of meetings)
1 hour outreach (tabling, flyering, phone-banking)

become part of? What contributions do you feel you can bring to the component or project in
general?

community you grew up in has influenced your development as a person, and any unique
experiences that have contributed to your growth. Feel free to include your hobbies, special
talents, skills or and events that may have influence your pursuit of higher education.
4. As an intern for MEChA Calmecac, you will be able to interact with other students from various
communities within the Student Retention Center. How familiar are you with working with
other communities and creating cross-community collaboration?
Some component/work groups you may intern for:
Centro Coatlícue Coordinator (Gender and Sexuality Component): Marilynda Bustamante,
marilynda@ucla.edu
● Interns will work closely with the component coordinator and work group to help coordinate
events, counseling curriculums and staff developments. They will help create workshops that
discuss holistic development and the different issues that the Chicano/Chicana and
Latina/Latino community face at UCLA. Interns will have the opportunity to advocate for
gender and sexuality related issues as well as help facilitate meetings, workshops, and talking
circles.
Calpulli Coordinator Calmecac Mentorship Component: Rafael Garibay,

● Macehualin will help in the pairing of Mentors and Mentees as well as help monitor the
progress of their relationship. They will have the opportunity to plan and attend all mentorship
social and cultural events. The Macehualin will gain a lot of new development such as
commuication skills, leadershipship skills and technical skills. Our Machelualin input is also
considered to be very valuable so we will help
Telpochcalli Coordinator (Academic Peer Counseling Component): Gerardo Lopez,

● Macehualin will work closely with the telpochcalli (counseling) coordinator and will help assess
common student topics, as well as create tools to address them. They will also help organize all
academic workshops with the component and update resources such as information on
graduate and professional schools with major and minor information.
Raza Youth Empowerment Project Coordinator: Clarissa Gomez Ruvalcaba,

● Macehualin will be working with the director and coordinators of this project to provide high
school students with the opportunity and resources to organize around issues affecting their
community. The students come from different high schools and work in coalition named the
United Youth of Aztlan (UYA).
Xinachtli Assistant Director: Olympia Naranjo, olyjna@gmail.com
● Macehualin will be working with MEChA Calmecac’s sister outreach project, Xinachtli (this
includes the director, outreach coordinator, and staff) by attending site once a week. Xinachtli
goes to high schools to provide peer advising and tutoring. Current sites include Santa Monica
High School, West Adams High School, Civitas School of Leadership and Pico Youth and
Family Center.
MEChA de UCLA Community and Labor Coordinators: Ana Salcedo Garibay and Gustavo
Garcia, communitylabor.mechadeucla@gmail.com
● Macehualin will participate in learning about issues in the community including labor,
immigration, and education, to name a few, as well as being active in organizing off campus.
The Community and Labor component aims to be the liaison between MEChA de UCLA to the
surrounding community. Come learn organizing skills and connect to our communities!
