Meza 1 Jodi L Simmons English Department, Sonoma State University Rohnert Park, CA 94928 Dear professor Simmons, Coming into English 100A I was confident in my writing to begin with but I knew there was always room for improvement. Coming into the class I was frustrated, in all honesty, because I thought I had passed my writing exam in order to be in English 101, however, coming into the class I slowly began to learn more than I had ever before. I had never had any English teachers at all show me so much different writing examples and promotes to do. I had a teacher who would literally sit at her desk and eat while she told us to only read the entire ninety minutes of class. Coming into 100B I was excited to learn more. I had experienced learning more than I had ever before, when it came to ethos, logos, pathos, annotating, evaluating Ads, writing my first persuasive essay, I had done so many different types of essay, more than I ever had. Leaving this class I feel more prepared than ever. With writing my research paper I was excited because I knew exactly what I wanted to write about, since I have a major passion for art I wanted to go more in depth of art therapy. I want to become an art therapist and I know that for me art has always helped me. Writing this essay was not my hardest one to write, but it was challenging to fully get the details the way I wanted them and the way I wanted the layout to be. I know that coming into this class, has challenged me to write better research essays, and writing in general. With my finished research essay, I am happy how it has come together, I rearranged my writing layout and everything runs smoothly. With Ad analysis paper, this one was challenging but not to a great extent, I have been familiar with writing these types of papers. However, with the Ad analysis, I was unable to fully understand how to focus more on the ad than the actual detailed facts. I wanted to write more of a research paper than a descriptive analysis paper. With the final product I tried to focus more on the actual Ad and use more of a straightforward commentary than facts. With the current event paper, was one of the hardest for me to write, it challenged me to look more beyond my commentary and write more evidence based. I still struggled in the final product because I couldn’t really understand the way I wanted the paper to be. I improved the Meza 2 issues I had wrote about blaming the doctors more, and focused more on the awareness and significance of the news. In the final essay I am happy with the outcome of it. Overall, the entire year spent in English 100A/B has been an upmost great experience for me. It has shaped my writing into something I am a lot more confident in. the class has showed me more than I am use to, and motivated me to keep working on my free writing. I feel more capable and knowledgeable in my writing. Also, knowing my resources in order to get help in my writing has helped me, I will take advantage of the help from the writing center. Thank you for everything that you do for your class, without your positive attitude and your engagement in the class, my experience would have been nowhere closed to what I received this year. You have changed my perspective on English, thank you. Sincerely, Ariana Meza Meza 3 Ariana Meza Prof. Simmons Eng. 100B 8 May 8, 2015 Natural Healing; Art Therapy People have always dealt with life altering situations and countless number of struggles, some experience worse than others. With the help of different healing programs, personal hobbies, and grieving techniques, the majority of the people begin to heal over time. It is not just adults who suffer from life hardships; children are also being affected by traumatic, disturbing events. For example some get abused, see abuse, get bullied or encounter other life altering situations. At some point in their lives, everyone experiences tragedy, loss, and trauma, everyone grieves, copes and heals with their situations in different ways, but art therapy has emerged as a universal way to help people recover. In the article, “Art Therapy helps Breast Cancer Patients,” describes how art therapy has been proven to improve mental and physical health and even a higher quality of life to patients who are going through radiation. The article tells a true story about a group of women who were receiving radiation treatment for breast cancer; they went through an experiment to prove art therapy helps heal (“Breast Cancer”). There were around 41 women who participated in the experiment but were divided into two groups, one group received the art therapy sessions while going through radiation treatment. The other group still received radiation treatment but they did not participate in the art therapy session (“Breast Cancer”). Before the experiment each woman had to answer questions about how they felt before they started radiation then they answered the same questions two months after and then six months after radiation (“Breast Cancer”). At the Meza 4 program, the art sessions provided any art materials the woman wanted. Many of the women did not feel comfortable with whom they were anymore and some even isolated themselves from friends and family. The goal for the art sessions was to help restore body image and reduce stress, the art sessions gave the woman time and space to express themselves (“Breast Cancer”). It was a way to help the woman feel confident during their struggle. Art therapy, for these women helped with their internal thoughts and feelings, it gave them a sense of hope, relieved stress and anxiety and decreased depression. After all the art sessions, results were concluded and they were great; the women who were part of the art sessions, they showed great improvement in their total health, quality of life, psychological and physical health. The women who didn’t participate in the session, they felt the same and some even felt worse than before they started their treatment (“Breast Cancer”). This shows how art can influence a positive outcome to individuals. Art can help a person whether they’re grieving, overcoming something traumatic, having self-harm thoughts, internally-ill, and even brain injured patients. In the article, “Helping Soldiers with Traumatic Brain Injuries Through Art Therapy,” Mellissa Walker talks about how art therapy has helped injured veterans. An art director and creator of “The Healing Arts Program,” she helps our nation’s service members heal, with the help of art (“Helping Soldiers”). Walker created the program at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence, a medical center that provides help to service members that suffer from combat traumatic brain injuries (“Helping Soldiers”). Walker created the program in hopes to somehow help the injured veterans. The program is a four-week process that focuses on cognition, physical and psychological health and rehabilitation to the service-members (“Helping Soldiers”). In the article, it states that according to the defense department, there have been more than 266,000 military members that are now suffering from brain injuries and parallelization just from 2000 to 2012. Walker felt that each veteran who is Meza 5 physically or mentally injured deserves help. Determined to heal these men, she uses art and music to communicate with the disabled patients. Giving them a chance to express themselves by studio art and through music, giving them an outlet to listen or play freely. “I am humbled by each of their experiences, which they openly share with me through an outpouring of creativity.” ‘While I will never understand what they have been through completely, each piece of artwork created moves us closer to their truth,” said Walker. She has seen the changes within each veteran and with their progression, she feels a sense of accomplishment. Each veteran would actually engage in session and explain their memories and fears with not only her but others, with that, she felt a sense of accomplishment. Art therapy is not only a way for relaxation and comfort, it can heal many issues these patients suffer from: psychological health, cognitive issues, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), anxiety and paranoia, etc. (“Helping Soldiers”). Creativity comes from the right side of the brain and the trauma ends up being on the left side of the brain, making a person’s body alert of their surroundings. So, when someone uses art, it connects the brain back to the right side, creating a distraction to the trauma, allowing healing to begin. People are then able to express themselves and their feelings through creativity distracting them from dwelling on their situations (Klim). Walker’s art program eventually got patients to express their experiences of what happened in war, which was shocking to her since the majority have never told anyone (“Helping Soldiers”). “They will come in unsure about their art making abilities and why they are creating a mask, but during the process, many will share things that they never have shared before.” Soldiers encounter unthinkable things everyday when they are at war, even when they return home they still have to deal with the unforgettable memories. Projects that Walker creates, gives each veteran a chance to open up and connect with others about their feelings and fears. She is not the only helping hand in America, there are a variety of art therapy/healing Meza 6 programs that not only help veterans but children, teens, adults, senior citizens, cancer patients, etc. Art therapy is a great way to heal peoples’ pain; without using words, anyone is able to speak their mind by creativity and imagination. Adults are not the only ones who deal with a troubled lifestyle; children are being exposed to adult situations at such a young age, affecting them and their future majorly. For example, in 2005, the hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Louisiana; the aftermath left families separated, homes destroyed, memories gone; all the survivors had years to heal. Children were taken in and observed during healing programs; strangers were interested on how Katrina survivors, especially kids, were adjusting to their new life. In the New York Times article, “Using Crayons to Exorcise Katrina,” by Shaila Dewan, talks about how art therapy is healing Katrina survivors and how all the art pictures tell a story. There have been a lot of studies that prove that the Katrina survivors developed more anxiety; they had a more difficult time in school and even had suicidal thoughts/ attempts (Dawan). Art supported many of the survivors around their community, especially children; the drawings that each kid created told a story of how they felt (Dawan). While the Katrina children drew, their art work was observed. Most of the kids drew similar pictures, especially triangles; drawing the specific shape, gave them a sense of safety (Dawan). The triangles represented the roofs of houses they stood on while the water rushed around them. In the article, Dawan included, that not just children participated in the art sessions, adults did as well. The drawing level each person was at was below their artistic ability for their age, “Studies show, it could be a result of traumatic regression.” The healing process for any traumatic situation takes time; even though the pain still remains in each of the survivor’s heart, any support they received definitely helped. Each art session that many of the families went to, children and adults began to feel a sense of stability and Meza 7 hope; building their community back up by working together. When children face a traumatic event in their life, if they choose to do art as a healing technique, their artwork can usually tell a story, even if it’s unintentional. “Some theories show that children’s drawings can be used as representations of their experience (Shaiako 1).” Dawan stated that even though the art therapy was not a complete success in healing everyone, it still made a difference in countless number of lives. Giving individuals motivation to continue their lives, to build their community back up and to seek happiness again. The article, “Art Therapy Changes lives of Abused Children,” discusses all aspects of art therapy and how the art can help anyone with any disability and struggle. Tamara Herl, an art therapist, works to help abused children recover from traumatic situations (“Art Therapy”). Herl is involved in the Heart-to-Heart Advocacy Center. “I think the greatest value of art therapy with children who have been abused or neglected is that it provides an opportunity to give a voice to their pain,” said Herl. The pain that each abused child has, is silenced for certain reasons, some are scared of their abuser so they choose to not speak, some are scared to be taken away from their home and some are not able to fully develop the right words to tell what is happening to them. The sad thing is that when younger children become victims of child abuse they grow up thinking it is normal. That is also another reason they will not speak of their situations, because they think it is the norm. “Drawings are helpful to understand a specific child’s fears, concerns and anxieties,” says Monica Shiakou, author of “Representations of Attachment patterns in the Family Drawings of maltreated and no-maltreated children (Shaikou).” Shiakou states that maltreated and nonmaltreated children view life differently, showing proof in their drawings. “Studies shown that when compared drawings of maltreated and non-maltreated children, there is a great difference.” This helps therapists get an idea if there should be concern for certain children. One example that Meza 8 was observed; abused children tend to draw different than non-abused children; they were most likely to draw disowned bodies, which is a sign of trauma (Shiakou). Most of the time abused children do not include their caregivers in their drawings (Shiakou). These art sessions and different drawing techniques have helped therapists identify emotional trauma from their young patients, as in the case of being victims of abuse (Shiakou). Therapists cannot fully assume that their clients are being abused, however, just by observing their behavior in sessions and analyzing their artwork they can get signs of potential abuse. Even though it is not technically healing, art therapy can still help children in the process of healing. Therapists will get a gist of the problem and set goals to help their young clients with recovery. “With the Art Therapy, it gives visual proof on how each abused victim has progressed, this can be especially helpful on days when children feel discouraged about their progress,” says Herl (Shiakou.) Thousands of children are being abused each day, from infant babies to teen years; it affects each and every child. When a child is exposed to any form of abuse, they tend to grow up with progressive anger and some even grow up to be the new abuser and a lot of them just end up in jail. With the help from art they are able to beat the odds for abused kids. Art, music, dance, drama, any form of art can help each child speak their mind without feeling scared; they are able to express their concerns and feelings without feeling judged. In some cases, art therapy does not technically heal, but it can be used as a first step to healing. When young children are put into therapy, therapists are there to “follow” their young clients. Some kids will speak about their fears and concerns but the majority will draw, play, paint, craft, etc. Most of the time children will not speak their minds because sometimes they are shy or scared, so this allows each child to express their feelings without using their words. When a child faces a traumatic event, the memories and feelings from the specific event can hide in their Meza 9 subconscious, which can alter their future (“How Art”). Art therapy sessions can help any kid who has a different background: who suffer from a mental health, have learning disabilities, grieving from a loss, who have emotional problems, who has been abused, even cancer patients and plenty more diverse backgrounds (“How Art”). Overall, Art therapy is an open door that allows people to open up in a creative way which can lead them to expressing their inner thoughts and concerns. Art therapy is one of the best ways to heal someone; it allows an individual to express themselves freely and creatively, allowing them to push away or access hurt feelings, grieving pain, emotional memories, fears, concerns, stress and anxiety. With many examples, art has helped universally; helping young children grow up positively, instead of falling in the outcome statistics of what they have had to encounter in their past. Art therapy has helped veterans, cancer patients, abused children, grieving families, and many more. All over the world, art is being used to heal mentally and physically. Although, some may argue that art is not a medical healing technique, it is a natural healing technique and has been proven to influence and help many people all around the world. Meza 11 Ariana Meza Eng. 100b May 8, 2015 2015 The Reality behind Advertisement- Discriminating Women Girls are being targeted by the advertising industries, whether it be for their self-image, their flaws on their face, using them as objects, or making a woman seduce a burger. Women rule the majority of ads, and for that comes with issues. Young girls see these ads, and while some philosophically think that is not how women act or look, some girls look up to this. We as society are at a crucial part in this generation, where young girls are taking selfies and speaking a language “pre-teen”, hoping they fit in as a “young adult,” trying to live up to their expectations of what they see in magazines and TV commercials. The ideal body for women has changed over many decades, the way women are portrayed in commercials is emotionally disturbing to women of all types. This generation has convinced girls of all ages that being sexy is better than being smart, and that being who you are is not socially acceptable. While being interviewed by Ad Age, the CEO of Carls Jr. fast food industry, Andy Puzder, talks about the Ads he chooses to display on TV. While only spending around 80 million dollars on the Carls Jr advertisement, compared to other fast food industries, Puzder said it is cheaper to use sexual strategy (Byrson). Puzder said that the outcome is positive, more people tend to buy more burgers afterwards. However, the way they “sell” their food is disrespectful to women. The industry is disrespectful to women. The industry has a long history of using women in their Ads to eat the food seductively. In one example, they used Kim Kardashian in one of their commercials Meza 12 to advertise their salads. Watching Kim K eat the salad, she takes every bite slowly, they focus a lot on her eyes, the dripping of the dressing, her licking it off. In an interview with her she explains that doing this commercial it was very difficult for her because the producers wanted it so perfect, she ended up getting sick from the salad because she had to replay the scene over and over again. As kids grow up, they are oblivious to the adult “humor” behind the ads. Over time they assume that these ads are what is true in person. Over the past decade Carls Jr has shown their appearance on superbowl commercials, their Ads have become more risky each time. The superbowl of 2014, Carls Jr. released a TV Ad that was the most disturbing to many viewers. Using a “hot” brunette to star in the one and half minute commercial, she was dressed in daisy dukes and a cropped, tied up, flannel shirt. In the middle of nowhere, this women is with a Carls Jr. take out bag, taking out the sandwich she attempts to eat the “new big sausage breakfast.” Taking the long hot dog that is in a small hamburger, she attempts “to eat it.” However, she doesn’t even eat it, she seduces the hot dog, portraying herself as if she was doing a sexual affection to the sandwich. This commercial was banned right after it was aired on the suberbowl, the highly explicit contents in the video was not family oriented, and even too risky for a commercial to be on TV. The Carls Jr shows our viewers that these women are only goof for their looks. Children who sees these ads are being exposed, unknowingly see the expectations society seeks for women. Our culture consists of being the best, to look good, girls compare themselves to each other, and all this plays a big role in our generation women of all ages and girls as young as eight are being targets of these ads. Girls at such a young age see how their favorite celebrities look, how girls their age on TV look, they want to look like the “popular” character, and they want to be socially accepted. Many girls at this age, they end up wanting the best improved technology, so they can take selfies, so they can fit in with the crowd, they want the best brand clothing, they beg Meza 13 their parents for them to wear makeup, they stuff their bras, they do anything to be older. The reason behind this is because these young girls idolize these ads, what they see on a daily basis/ Pre-teens are at the age where they are trying to figure out themselves; being grown up, looking grown up. What they see, shows that good looks give the attention, the attention that will make them feel pretty and accepted. Even at the age of young adult to the age of 50, women are persuaded by Ads, especially when they see other women look amazing as ever when they are the same age. There has been advertisement for older women, everywhere we look as a society, we see magazines with beautiful cover girls, celebrities who just had children and already looking amazing. These magazines irritate women, especially mothers, they get frustrated and envious at the fact celebrities can look that amazing and not have one flaw from their pregnancy. What these magazines have is excessive touch ups, constant Photoshop to these women who are in the Ads. However, what a lot of viewers don’t realize is that Photoshop is the main aspect in publishing a magazine or any Ad, like billboard, commercials, posters, etc. All mothers have to deal with the stretch marks, the extra baby fat, it takes a while to get the “good” body back to where it was before. Women see these ads and want to look exactly like these “beautiful” ladies, they don’t critically think that these women in magazines are not 100% real. Those who have been aging more, they become more vain (some not all), they want to look like their younger self. Some take the step to get Botox, plastic surgery, and even liposuction, just so they can meet their “society’s expectations.” In one tactic that Peoples Magazine uses, they take women who are around the age of 30-50 and have them model, have them photoshoped for their covers. People’s magazine has used this a lot, it’s as if they are trying to make ladies feel guilty for how they look, for not losing weight, for not looking like these celebrities. This to the women of our generation is a disturbance, ladies are tired of feeling guilty Meza 14 for not looking a certain way, especially when we are being compared to celebrities who are being paid to be photoshoped and or who spends money to look younger. While TV ads may be a big contribution to how women and both girls feel about themselves, or even how others think of women. Stereotypes get involved as well, society sees women in magazines, TV commercials, billboards, they see these women as objects, women as nothing but a silent sex toy, not even seen as a person for their intelligence, but for their pretty face. Men soon begin to stereotype all pretty women, even girls begin to think that of women with a beautiful outlook, they judge right away. With this, all comes from Ads, effecting our women in this world, negatively. With everything that is shown on TV and social media, our Ads our playing a big negative factor in our society. The target of stereotypes and discrimination is the women of our generation. Young girls, teens, young adults, and older adults, they are all being negatively portrayed and convinced. Sometimes these ladies don’t consciously realize the ads and what they are slowly making every girl feel and think about. These ads are creating a barrier to how we think of ourselves, how we are trying to be ourselves and express our true values and beauty, these ads are distracting us. With the Carls Jr. commercials, the Seventeen Magazines, Peoples magazines, Victoria secret, brand names, photoshoped celebrities, TV shows “popular” characters, all this is effecting the girls of our generation. Women are tired of what they see on TV, they want to be known for their intelligence, their unique value, their purposes in life, their true beauty. Meza 16 Ariana Meza Eng. 100B Jodi Simmons 8 May 2015 The Superbug; Resistant Anti-Bacteria Antibiotic resistant bacteria that is not only circulating California but also circulating the U.S as well. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that at least 2 million people in the U.S develop the serious bacterial infector. This bacteria has killed around 23,000 people each year for the infection (“Fox News”). The superbugs is an infection that talks place in the gut area. This bug has formulated at the UCLA Medical Center in California. Attacking the Immune system, anyone who gets infected by this bacteria can face a hard lethal battle, depending on how bad the infection is. People who receive this antibiotic resistant bacteria, can have a very hard time fighting off the infection. The bacteria is able to fight off the antibiotic which is not good since that is the main thing doctors want, in order to help heal their patient. For the past couple months, the UCLA medical center has been trying to figure out ways to help the situation they believe they caused. Because of them, California medical patience are being diagnosed for CRE, in other words, Superbug. Over 100 people infected, California has become more aware of the superbug and what it affects and who it affects. While there is not much news about this issue, people are still being affected by it and should still be talked about. This news is significant because there is a lot of harm being done to patients who get affected by the superbug, and it is good to be aware on how to prevent getting it and what to do to treat it. Meza 17 In California there has been recent news about an 18 year old boy, who is in critical condition at the Medical center, he was diagnosed with the superbug about a week ago. The infection comes from endoscopes, doctors told the news that the infection is spread to patients who underwent a medical examination/ procedure. Around 170 patients were exposed to the bacteria (Chang). At least seven people were infected majorly, and around two have died already from the superbug. Doctors at the Ronald Regan UCLA medical announced that the infections was caused from contaminated endoscopes, which were used to diagnose and treat pancreatic problems (Chang). The problem with the endoscopes, the doctors said that because the material is so hard to disinfect, they tend to not get fully clean all the way. So, my question is to viewers is how come these endoscopes are still being used even if the doctors know it is a major health risk? These professionals are putting the superbug into patients with full awareness that some of these endoscopes are not fully disinfected. How come that two people need to lose their lives, in order to spread more awareness on media about this issue. It might not be entirely big news for the entire society, however, it still affects many people around the U.S. People are getting infections like the superbug, where bacteria is resistant to antibiotics, in this case, it is harder to fight off the infections, leading to serious health risks. Overall the news about this infection is just the start, there are a lot of health risks lately that are taking over. The superbug is just one of many that is new and getting spread around. Even if this infection can’t be spread around by physical contact but only by having certain procedures done, this shows still that it can be spread to anyone who is having work done or examinations. According to the FDA, around 500,000 patients have procedures that use duodenoscopies which are like endoscopes, in the U.S every year (Chang). The 18 year old, is under 24-7 care, he was diagnosed with CRE, also known as the superbug (Infection on Steroids). The 18 year old spent from October up until January in the hospital and is Meza 18 still trying to fight of the infection; attacking the immune system (Infection on steroids). After going back to the hospital, the 18 year old boy has been trying to fight off the infection since; suffering from an extremely weakened immune system, it basically weakened everything in his body, exposing him to more health risks (Infection on steroids). Even though health officials say that the outbreak is no large threat to the public, I say that even though this is technically true, audience should still keep in mind that two people still died from the infection. Also, that since these endoscopes are used all around the U.S and they are hard to fully cleanse, there is technically still a threat. To also think about, medical centers that are not that funded like other high cost hospitals. Even if it doesn’t affect a lot of people, don’t you think our society or community should become more aware of the situation? More people around the U.S outside of California, can become effected regardless, if the endoscopes are not fully cleaned, there is a chance the superbug can be spread somewhere else. For just the Ronald Regan UCLA Medical Center, there was over 200 procedures done with the infected endoscopes, how carless is that (Infections of Steroids)? Its only been 60 years since Dr. Alexandra Fleming created the first antibiotic, however the superbug is capable to fight against this antibiotic, so whoever gets this infections has a harder time fighting it (Leung). One major problem that the new superbug is affecting, MSRA (another form of the superbug) was fast pace, causing pneumonias, bone and skin infections, which became highly toxic that children were dying because the lack of help the antibiotic was working (Leung). This is a different form of the superbug, the MSRA tends to be circulating people who are close knitted. People who are in close “physical contact, like children in day care centers, prisoners in jails and athletes on sports teams (Leung).” Now that we see more people getting similar type infections, and its not only to people who receive pancreatic procedures/examinations, we are also Meza 19 seeing the fact there is a similar type antibiotic resistant infection, and its targeting people who are at closer contact with other individuals. The fear I have for America right now is the fact there is an estimate of 10,000 cases so far, but none of the doctors even recognize or discuss the issue within their community (Lueng). This is what our community needs to recognize, to do more research on small news that is given. Some people look at the news on TV and only get possibly a 30 second discussion on the topic, then they worry or get interested, then they go on with their day. However, people need to become more aware of what is happening in our world, community, or state. It is our personal job to do our own research, to create our own intellectual thinking of issues that are surrounding us. With the fact that doctors are not fully showing every detail of these problems, it concerns me. Maybe, yes they don’t want to scare people away, but I think it would be more helpful if we got more information from the doctors directly, in an interview. With thinking about this current event, the superbug is not really well known in California, let alone the U.S. Do you think that doctors should be more aware or be more open to the public with the information regarding the antibiotic resistant bacteria? I saw this news information on TV before I started reading the articles. I then began doing research and realized a lot more to the superbug story. There are different types of the superbug that target different people. Doctors are not all to blame, however, they should be more careful when they use their instruments, because if they are using it on patience that are highly infected or sick, they shouldn’t reuse the tools until the examine the tools after it is disinfected. America should become more aware of what is happening in the world, because especially reading about the MSRA, it is a completely different but similar type of superbug, it still attacks the immune system but it happens by more of a closer physical contact. Doctors have more to do in order to keep our people healthy, and not spread more infections than there already is.
