
ERA Board Member
“Antonio has been an inspiration in leading an airline with a limited home market into a
position in which it earned the respect of a panel of senior statesmen of the air transport
industry such that it the panel judged it to be a well-deserved winner of an Airline of the Year
Award in 2011.” September 23, 2012
Mike A. Ambrose, Director General, European Regions Airline Association

SATA was founded in 1941 and is the oldest, most resilient and most innovative airline
group in Portugal.

SATA is comprised by SATA Air Açores, SATA Internacional, SATA Aeródromos, SATA
Express and Azores Express.

SATA Air Açores operates a modern fleet of 4 Bombardier Q400 NextGen and 2
Bombardier Q200 and offers full handling in the Azores. SATA Air Açores operates

routes within the Azores and between the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and Algarve
and has in-house full engineering and maintenance capabilities.

SATA Internacional operates 4 Airbus A320-200 and 4 Airbus A310-300.

SATA Aeródromos operates 5 airfields in the Azores.

SATA Express is a Tour Operator in Canada and Azores Express is a Tour Operator in
the United States.

SATA is a customer-centric airline that operates a 40 strong destination network over
the Atlantic, in four Continents, with a major presence in North America, Europe and
now Brazil.

SATA Air Açores was the first Portuguese airline ever to win the European Airlines
Association “ERA Airline of the Year Bronze Award”, in 2011 and secured
financing from the European Investment Bank for its complete fleet renovation
programme.

SATA has pursued a network-driven growth approach in the Atlantic and the entire
organization has been modernized, including a state-of-the-art web and smartphone
presence, a Revenue Management System and Amadeus Altea.

SATA moved from an international charter-based operation to a regular, schedule-based
operation. The range, depth, quality and profitability of SATA’s network over the
Atlantic has improved and SATA now has agreements with other carriers, such as TAP,
US Airways, Virgin American, WestJet, Air Berlin, Aeroflot, Aigle Azur, Air Europa,
SAS, Wideroe, Blue1, Binter Canarias, GOL, with many other partnerships in the
pipeline, which will both feed SATA’s flights and increase SATA’ brand awareness
worldwide.

SATA has a new corporate image and livery, launched with the new fleet, in 2010, which
has been a worldwide success, having won several international awards and has
positioned SATA as a young and vibrant brand, despite being the oldest airline in
Portugal and a very conservative airline with respect to its balance sheet.

SATA has been able to maintain a sustainable economic standing, despite the existing
challenges in the sector and in Portugal.

SATA posted profits in the last two years, 2011-2012, thanks to its lower unit cost and
well balanced international exposure.

SATA posted profits while increasing the number of city-pairs/routes offered despite
business cycle conditions.

SATA has experienced growth in EBITDA against the economic cycle and higher fuelcosts, due to a low and decreasing non-fuel unit cost (CASK), higher utilization rates of
aircraft and crews, higher load-factors, and a better network, which have altogether
allowed for a lower break-even yield. Smart use of IT and forecasting econometrics has
been critical to maximize asset utilization.

prizes for IT developments and applications, besides having been the worldwide launch
customer for IT powerhouses like Amadeus and Microsoft.

due to its novel web-check in, mobile check-in and mobile boarding-pass, which speaks
in favor of SATA’s innovation capabilities and its customer focus.

SATA has one of the most innovative websites in the industry, which leverages on socialnetworks marketing potential (e.g. volume based discount fares) and state-of-the-art
fare transparency and is ahead of the industry curve in big data and CRM and Green IT.
