Homework #2 Russia – Lake Baikal – DUE Wednesday April 24th
Your assignment this time is to write a one page essay on Lake Baikal. Listed below are words, terms and issues that you
need to include in your essay. Go through the articles and videos listed below for information that you can use to write
your essay. Do NOT just write a general descriptive essay about the Lake, it is important that you address the words,
terms and issues. The rubric that you used for the first homework applies, as do all the other requirements. I have
attached the rubric below again for you to review.
These are the things you need to address:
Words: Ozero Baykal, “wealthy lake”, World Heritage list by UNESCO, seismic zone, clean water, islands pulp mill,
pollution, unemployment, Angara River, Great Lakes (USA), ice orchestra, Nissan. (you will find all these as you read the
articles and watch the videos)
Basic geography of the lake – Where is it? What is geographically interesting about the lake? How was it formed how is
it different from other water bodies, look at the rivers that feed the lake and how water exits the lake Depth,
uniqueness, biodiversity etc. Other names for the lake/sea
Comparison with other water bodies (amount of water – comparison of sizes etc.)
Environmental issues – pollution – what is happening – plans for future (looking at the effects of what might happen if
the industry is closed)
Unique uses of the lake – there are 2 short videos showing different ways the lake has been used for “recreation”.
Final paragraph – after having done some reading about this lake, what would make you want to go to Lake Baikal, what
would you want to do there? (remember to specify the time of year you would like to go)
