Aligning PROGRAM & ROSTER 2015 – 2016 Institute of Management Accountants Louisville, Kentucky Chapter Chartered July 19, 1928 Over 75,000 members strong, the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) is a leading force in today’s accounting industry. With membership in 120 countries and 300 professional and student chapters worldwide, the IMA provides networking and guidance on today’s accounting and ethical practices. The Louisville Chapter was chartered on July 19, 1928 as the 32 nd chapter. The IMA is a non-profit organization founded in 1919 and led by its members. When initially founded, the organization was named the National Association of Cost Accountants (NACA). In 1957, we became the National Association of Accountants (NAA), which merged with the Certified Management Accountants Institute in 1991 to become the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). Through all of these transitions the IMA has evolved into the leading network of accounting, financial, and information management executives. We offer our members career support and professional development through education programs, numerous information resources, certification, and the ability to exchange ideas and experience with fellow professionals. We had a good year in 2014-2015, but it has not been without challenges. Membership has slowed, meeting attendance is down and volunteers for the board have become a challenge to find. Some of this was addressed at the 2nd annual conference that we had in April. Questions were presented to those in attendance to get feedback on what they wanted this chapter to be. From these results we have decided to focus the 2015-2016 year on fewer but larger events. We may still add in some smaller events as the planning continues, but our primary events will consist of 2 half day events and 1 full day event. I will provide more detail on these shortly. Often the first thought when there are problems, is what are we doing wrong? Well, to answer that question honestly, the answer is nothing. Society has changed, the business world has changed and we need to change. We haven’t done things wrong we just need to find a different way to fit into today’s business world. We need fresh ideas to jump start us back into an operation of growth much like the economy as a whole needs. The following will discuss some of our plans for the upcoming year but I don’t want this to be an end list! If someone has an idea that they think would be valuable for the membership, bring it up to myself or one of the board members. Our first event will be a half day seminar that will be held on September 25th from 8-12:15. This will provide 4 hours of CPE and will be held at a location on the east side of town-(to be determined). We will have 4 speakers for this event and will provide more information on them and the topics as we get closer to the event. The Lincoln Trail Regional Council will be hosting a Mr. Excel event on October 16th. This will be done in conjunction with the quarterly regional council meeting that will be held on October 17th. We encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about IMA global or the Regional level to attend these events. This is a great opportunity to hear what is going on at the levels above the chapter and presents many opportunities for us at the local level. Please talk to a board member if you have interest in attending or go to the Lincoln Trail website for more details. October will be a busy month for us in that we will also be holding another student night. Last year’s event had some challenges at Bellarmine so we are currently discussing a couple other options of either going back to IUS which we have had tremendous success in the past or possibly exploring having the event at Sullivan. Sullivan has expressed an interest in being more involved with the IMA and is considering the possibility of a student chapter. Much of this is in the early phases of discussions but we hope to have a decision on a location for the Student night by the end of July. We are also looking into the possibility of doing a joint activity with the Kentucky Society as well. If anyone has any insight that will be beneficial for this event or any others that we are working on please feel free to make suggestions. In January we will be hosting a 4 hour tax update event. We have done this for many years and have had success with this event. The plans are to have from 2-4 speakers to discuss pertinent tax topics relating to the upcoming year. Ideally we plan to have at least one on a federal level and one from the state level. As most of our membership is in Kentucky the state level will focus on Kentucky. For our final event we will have our 3rd annual full day seminar on April 22nd at Shelby Campus. From the feedback at last year’s event, everyone seemed to like this location so we will continue for another year there. We will be looking for speakers and topics for this event, so if anyone has a topic or knows of someone for this event please let myself or one of the board members know. These events are put on for our membership and the best way for us to provide a good event for you is to let us know what you want to learn about, know more about or find pertinent for the profession. We are also looking into possibly doing a couple of plant tours and maybe a networking event as well. We will also continue with the tradition of having joint events with PMAL, APICS, QM, KPMI and IIA as we have done in the past. We will provide more information on these events as the summer progresses. I look forward to working with the new board in the current year and hope to have the opportunity to meet many more of the membership at our events. The best way to make this a successful chapter is for members to get involved and speak. Please feel free to contact me anytime to discuss these opportunities. Dennis E. At first, assistance was accomplished through memoranda and correspondence. A system was developed early for periodic payments to chapter treasuries based on their membership. To guide more clearly the concept of chapter operation, however, an annual competition among chapters was begun in 1924, at the suggestion of Charles R. Stevenson who donated a trophy to be awarded to the winner. The following year, a system of payments to chapters was incorporated. Since then, various other trophies and awards have been introduced to provide additional recognition for high performance and excellence of operations. The competition is directed toward stimulating chapters to promote IMA's objectives and provide a broad spectrum of activities and services to members. Planning of each year's chapter activities by officers and directors in the late spring and early summer is thus encouraged. The Chapter Competition, therefore: Establishes standards of good performance though constant appraisal of chapter programs and activities. Measures actual performance against these standards by awarding credit for activities reported by each chapter. Monthly standings are published which effectively rate every chapter's success in meeting these standards. Provides incentives such as trophies, banners, and awards for excellence in planning, performance and reporting of chapter activities The competition is credited with having fostered a remarkable esprit de corps and kinship between the chapters and individual members. It has long been considered a sound and basic influence on the continued growth and advancement of the IMA. CHAPTER COMPETITION In 1924-35, in addition to payments to chapters based on their membership, annual competitions began which awarded points for each planned activity, such as programs, attendance, manuscripts and membership growth. The planning of each year’s program by chapter officers and directors is essential. Chapters receive monetary awards based on points earned, which is an incentive directed toward stimulating and promoting IMA’s objectives, and provide a broad spectrum of activities and services to members. Charles R. Stevenson, 1927-28 National President, conceived the competition and donated the first trophy, which bears his name. Between 1927 and 1974, ten additional trophies and awards were authorized. Competition is conducted in two divisions—the original and, since 1965, the Warner Division for chapters with less than 125 members. Louisville has always competed in the Stevenson Division. Stevenson Trophy — 1st Place: Awarded to the chapter with the highest point total. Remington Rand Trophy — 2nd Place: Awarded to the runner-up chapter. SCMS Trophy – 3rd place: Awarded to 2nd runner up chapter. Carter Trophy — Awarded to the chapter showing the greatest improvement in standing for the current year compared to its average for the preceding three years. Banners — Awarded to the 25 highest chapters in point totals.
