For an Honors Diploma, you must have both Chemistry and Physics Foreign Language Highly recommended for college core curriculum (At least 3 credits are required for the Honors Diploma) We recommend at least a “C” grade in English prior to pursuing a Foreign Language French is offered through the AP level Spanish is offered through the AP level. More and more universities are requiring two foreign language courses at the high school level to be admitted. Knowing a second language can help improve your job opportunities. Health and Physical Education Requirements All students must take .50 credit of Health All students must take .50 total credits of Physical Education (2 classes) Physical Education (.25 credits) should be taken prior to Weight Training (.25 credit) or Wellness Training (.50 credits) Starting with the class of 2014, students who participate in two full seasons of interscholastic athletics, marching band or cheerleading may earn .5 credits of physical education. Support Services Electives Office Aide allows a student to earn .50 credit as a pass/fail grade to be an office assistant and to run errands for the administration. This is by application only. Achieve proficiency benchmark on Competency Assessment Prospective College Athletes Register by the end of the Junior Year Register with the NCAA Clearinghouse at www.eligibilitycenter.org Be sure to meet with your counselor to be certain that you have the required courses to compete at a Division I or II college. You must have an ACT test result sent to college code # 9999 to be entered into the clearinghouse. You must also request your transcripts on NCAA & Naviance For NAIA colleges, you must register at www.playnaia.org You must have your ACT score sent to school code 9876 ACT Testing ACT is the most widely required college entrance test. SAT is required by some colleges on the east and west coast. Please check with your college to see which tests you should have on file. ACT has a WRITING component. Entering College Freshmen should have a writing score on file. We encourage all juniors to take the ACT in the second semester of that year. Please take the writing section at least once. You may re-take the ACT test as many times as you desire. The highest score will always be acknowledged. Educational Options Night School Summer School APEX-Computer based on-line course Flex Credit allows the student to design an individual program to meet the state standards – application only. College Credit Plus All Post-secondary enrollment options and dual enrollment are now called College Credit Plus. Parents are required to meet with the counselor to sign a letter of intent the year before students participate in CCP. Students can now view 15 and 30 credit hour pathways at the universities, and some universities are changing their admission requirements to make CCP more accessible to students. **CCP Info Night is February 11th at 6:30 p.m. in the THS auditorium!! On THS Campus College Credit Plus with Stark State English Department College Composition & American Literature 1865 -present College Comp can substitute for one of your English courses Students must pass College Comp before taking Am. Lit. Students must meet benchmarks of 18 on the English section of ACT or 70 on the Writing section of the COMPASS. Students must complete application process with Stark State in spring of 2016. Math Department College Algebra This course is taken online during one semester. Students must meet the benchmark of 22 on the Math section of ACT or a 54 on the Algebra section of the COMPASS Students must have passed Algebra III Students must complete application process in spring of 2016. Schedule Carefully Please schedule carefully and thoughtfully See you counselor if you have any questions about courses you should or need to take next year. Computerized scheduling will happen in May. Accuracy on your part makes the schedule better for all! To receive your schedule you must have ALL CLASS FEES for the current year paid in full. All Schedules must be returned by January 29th to Academy Teachers Parents should read the informational box on the back of the scheduling sheet explaining fees, schedule changes, CCP and other valuable information, and they must sign the back of your sheet. Students, please be sure to have signatures from your teachers! You don’t want to be last to get your schedule – get yours in on time! Thanks! Basic Art is required before Studio and Fine Arts Electives Classes of 2014 and beyond must have one credit of a Fine or Performing Art Advanced Studio Art. Art & Technology has a prerequisite of Basic Art. It is the study of digital media as a means of communication and artistic expression. A.P. Studio Art Drawing or 2D must be taken in conjunction with Advanced Studio first semester as a preparation for the portfolio. Teacher recommendation required. Drama is offered to grades 9-12, Advanced Drama is available to students who have completed Drama. Social Studies Electives Criminal Justice this class covers the organization of the United States legal system. Local officials and experts will speak. (Grades 11-12) Economics students will engage in a computerized environment to conduct economic research and application of fundamental concepts. (Grades 11-12) Human Behavior is a combination of psychology and sociology studying how people reason and think and how cultures of people live together (Grades 11-12) A.P. Psychology is a challenging and rigorous academic curriculum that requires strong reading and writing skills. There will be college level supplemental readings and summer reading. (Grades 11-12) Business Department Electives Financial Literacy & Business Concepts (Grades 9 and 10) Accounting 1 (Grades 10, 11, and 12) Business Law (Grades 10,11, and 12) Senior Project (Grade 12 only) Software Technology I & II (Grades 10, 11, and 12) Business Electives Business Law helps students see what it would be like to begin a business learning about contract law and financing a business. We offer Accounting - grades 10-12. This class satisfies the Financial Literacy requirement Senior Project allows students to complete two internships in career areas of their choice. This is an outstanding way to help define their career goals. College Tech-Prep Programs Business I & II with option for Business Experience This program focuses on office management and computers. This program also has a work component. See Mrs. Brendel for applications. Marketing I & II with option for Marketing Experience concentrates on the sales component of business. You will study advertising and promotion. There is a work component to this program as well. Please see Mrs. Haller for applications. To participate in the Experience course you must be 16 years of age with transportation English Electives Newswriting is a pre-requisite for Journalism. You will learn that unique style of writing. It is required that students take both semesters of Annual Staff as they create a yearly product. Devils’ Tale editors are recommended to take both semesters. Speech is highly recommended for all students as every career requires clear communication skills Performing Arts Marching and Concert Band require Mr. Lenzo’s initials if participating for the first time. II Geology Environmental Ecology These Elective Science Classes are also available: Anatomy and Physiology (must pass Chemistry first) Physics (must pass Algebra II first) AP Biology Honors Chemistry CCP Physics AP Chemistry (All of these require pre-requisite courses and teacher recommendations) *Honors Diploma requires both Chemistry and Physics Project Lead the Way Intro to Engineering Design is a level I class in the Engineering curriculum. Pre-requisite or Co-requisite: Algebra I part II Principles of Engineering is the level II class introducing mathematical and physical concepts. Prerequisite: Intro to Engineering Design and Algebra II Digital Electronics is the study of electronic circuits used to control digital signals. Prerequisites: the previous two courses, Algebra III can be taken concurrently and teacher approval. BioTechnical Engineering is the fourth level exploring biomedical engineering, molecular genetics, bioprocess engineering and agricultural and environmental engineering. Technology Electives Basic Metals is a pre-requisite to Advanced Metals Engineering Graphics is basic Engineering and CAD (Computer Aided Design) Traditional drafting equipment and computers will be used.
