Employers use resumes to help them decide who to interview for a job. They want to find the best person for the job as quickly as possible. WHAT JOB DO I WANT TO GET? Realistically, what jobs would you enjoy and what could you get? Pick one, two or three kinds of jobs (e.g. a cashier and a receptionist). If the jobs you want are very different from each other, you might need 2 or 3 different resumes. HOW DO I START? 1) Write down what you have to offer Include work experience, skills, training and community involvement 2) Determine what employers want/need Look at ads and highlight the skills that they are asking for that you have Focus on what you would do in that job and what would help you do it well 3) Show employers the best of what you have to offer Arrange and word you information so that an employer can focus on what is most important to the job that you are applying to. Emphasis the overlap between what the employer needs and what you have When you do this: The employer thinks this: Use simple, clear words and details to illustrate skills and duties This is easy to follow – this person’s skills really stand out Use clear headings for different sections This person is well-organized – I can find the information I want Include key skills relevant to the job That’s just what I was looking for! Be brief and direct (maximum 2 pages) This person respects how busy I am Make it look nice This looks easy to read – and this person has taken the time to make it neat and tidy Keep it fairly simple Don’t cram too much on one page One page is so much easier/quicker to read Check for spelling and grammar errors This person can write well and has proof read their work Make sure you are sending it to the right place and the right person If they don’t get your resume they can’t think about you at all! 2 TRANSFERRABLE SKILLS CHECKLIST Think to yourself, “Where have I used this and when can this be used in the future?” List your transferrable skills that you have that would be an asset to the job you’re applying to.
