When trouble pops up, today, you can't look to anyone
else to solve the problem. You are in control, and you
will have to be the one to stay cool in the face of hot
tempers. The best thing you can do is to lead by
example. If you don't fly off the handle, then no one
else will feel entitled to fly off the handle, either! Stay
smiling, and ask questions in order to get a better grip
on what is going on. You might have to sort through
the answers, though. Not everyone is telling the truth.

Should I Marry Him?
I have been with my Fiancé for almost four years, We are going
to get married next year but, there are a couple of concerns I
have: one is the fact that he never talks about his feelings, he
keeps everything inside of him. He sometimes has trouble with
expressing his excitement about things also. He never buys me
flowers or takes me out to dinner. He says that he doesn't know
why, but he never thinks of things like that. I don't know if this is
a side affect of depression or, maybe, he is sick of me. He says
that he loves me and that he wants to marry me. If this is true,
what is his problem?

Please Help me and My Family
My family don't get along. It's like we all hate each other. It's my
mom, me, my two brothers and a sister. I am the oldest. We all
have certain problems: My mom wants to quit smoking so she
is really stressed out. I am really selfish (I just can't help it). One
of my brothers is too bossy. He thinks he is better than the rest
of us and that he is the only one who helps my mom. My other
brother is kind of abusive and depressed. He always starts
fights and he's really spoiled (my mom doesn't yell at him for
doing things wrong and when she does, he laughs at her); My
sister (who's 7) makes messes and doesn't clean them up. I
really want to help because I don't like being upset all of the
time and having everyone hate everyone else. Even when we
start to get along, someone will say something to upset
someone else. Please help me and my family.

Hates School
I hate school. I cannot stand my school so I skip it almost every
day. Luckily, I am a smart person and I'm in all of the advanced
classes and don't have reputation as a rebel. Only the people
who really know me know about my strange feelings. My
parents don't care - they don't even mention it if I don't go to
school. What I end up doing is sleeping all day and then staying
up all night talking to my girlfriend. I get behind in my work and
when I try to go back to school I get a bunch of crap from my
teachers and friends. I just get so depressed when I think about
it. I have given up on trying to go back and now am considering
dropping out altogether, but I really don't want to do that
because I realize it would ruin my life. I don't want to go back at
all but I also don't want it to ruin my life. I am so confused and I
have really tried to go back and just can't take it. What should I
do? Please help.

and negative characteristics that may describe a
father. In the next slide, there are five characteristics
already listed. Get in groups and discuss them with
your classmates. Decide if these characteristics are

Susie had always desired to have a puppy. She had wanted a
puppy since she was two years old! One day, her father told her
that he would buy her a new puppy if she completed all of her
chores for the week. Susie was determined to get her new puppy.
She was willing to do anything, even clean her brother's
bedroom, so that she could get that puppy. Susie cleaned her
bedroom and the bathroom. She dusted and vacuumed her entire
house. She washed the dishes, swept the kitchen, and cleaned the
table. When Susie was finished with her chores, she waited
patiently for her father to come home. When he arrived, he saw
how clean the house was, and told Susie how proud of her he
was. Susie was elated when her father took her to buy a new
puppy the next morning. She was so happy that she could not
keep still the entire time she was in the car. She picked out the
cutest puppy she had ever seen!

REASONS FOR LACK OF
COMPREHENSION
Reading comprehension fails for a number of reasons. Students,
with the help of a facilitator if necessary, should attempt to
identify the cause(s) of lack of comprehension and then identify
appropriate reading strategies to compensate for the deficit(s).
Five reasons for lack of reading comprehension are:

Failure to understand a word

Failure to understand a sentence

Failure to understand how sentences relate to one another


Failure to understand how the information fits together in a
meaningful way (organization)
Lack of interest or concentration

took them to their final destination.
And here John, Lord Greystoke, and Lady Alice, his
wife, vanished from the eyes and from the knowledge
of men.

Our House
I live in a big yellow house near the main road. Our house has
eight windows and two balconies that overlook a big garden. On
the first floor, there are a kitchen, a hall, a living-room with
many paintings on the walls, a dining-room where we have all
our meals, a bathroom, a toilet, a computer room with lots of
books in a giant bookcase that fills the whole wall, and a garage.
In front of the house there are a garden, a swimming-pool, and a
large, green fountain with fish.
On the second floor, there are three bedrooms, a bathroom, and
a small toilet. On the third floor, there is an attic which has all
kinds of old furniture. Behind the house, there is a vegetable
garden. We have a large basement too, with a cozy sitting-room
and an open fireplace.
