to annotate and read intensely
 Round 1- Review your annotations and main points you
are going to share (3 mins)
 Round 2- Each person shares their reading and main
points (3 mins) – other cohort members are filling out

using today’s readings as your guide…(This will help you
to see where you are now)- NOW PUSH TO 30-40 words
Summaries of the Readings
Comparing/Contrasting Venn Diagram
 In your cohorts, create a Venn Diagram to be able to see
the similarities and differences between the readings
 Reporters- YOU WILL SHARE YOUR MAIN POINTS FROM
EACH TO YOUR COHORT SO EVERYONE IS ON SAME
PAGE
 Can you now write a 50-75 word summary for EACH of
the readings now?
 Give that a shot for 8 mins –
NOW… Let’s give you time to brainstorm/outline what you
will respond in your writing piece for this week
Do you know how to brainstorm ideas for writing?
Possible Option for Formatting…
The Brain works in a variety of
different ways
University professors want to be
able to read/hear YOUR VOICE, but
also show that you KNOW the
authors you’ve read…here’s an
option for your brainstorm/writing…
Creating Talking Points…
 Do you remember the talking points from Hurricane
Katrina discussion?
 Now you’ll create another round for our conversation on
Direct Action next session
 In your COHORT, help each create talking points, using
the argument flow chart as a base for your conversation
that also serves as foundation for your writing piece this
week
 Facilitators- help to make sure everyone is on task and
asking for help from each other
 Remember- THESE ARE YOUR TALKING POINTS
For our next session…Discussion
What you’ll need to have with you:
 Copies of your annotated readings (digital is ok)
 Summaries of each author
 Talking Points (Digital is ok)- will be checked for credit
 You’ll be having mini debate between TWO cohorts
(THIS WILL NOT BE WHOLE GROUP DISCUSSION)
Where this will go:
 You’ll use this conversation to guide and shape your
writing piece- remember that your ORIGINAL
understanding of the issue has probably changed after
reading/talking- IT SHOULD HAVE CHANGED
 Compose the 500-700 word piece based on this week’s
work
 Your emphasis is on WHAT you are saying and HOW you
