DISCOVERY INQUIRY
PRESENTATION

WHY ARE THE SUN AND
PLANETS ROUND?
WHY ARE THE SUN AND PLANETS
RO U N D ?
 Gravity is keeping the planets and stars spherical but mountains and valleys stop the
planets from being perfectly spherical.
 Large mountains or skyscrapers can only get to a certain point before they get destroyed
because they collapse under their own weight because of gravity being so strong the larger the
planet gets. The earth is a more oblate spherical shape because the earth spins.
 Our solar system was formed from nebula , Nebula is a concentrated area of gases
and cosmic dust in the ISM when enough of this gathers it gains a gravitational force.
 Because asteroids (or similar like things out in space) are so small they don’t have a
gravitational force strong enough to make them spherical like the planets.
WHY ARE THE PLANETS
CALLED WHAT THEY ARE?
WHY ARE THE PLANETS
CALLED WHAT THEY ARE?
Planets Why the planets are called what they are.
Mercury
Named after the roman god of travel because it appears to move so swiftly
Venus
Venus the planet that seem the brightest was named after the goddess of beauty
Earth
Earths name came from old English and Germanic word for ground
Mars
Mars because of it’s reddish colour was named after the war god because it reminded them of blood
Jupiter
It is the biggest planet it was named after the most important Greek god
Saturn
Former roman god of agriculture replaced by his daughter
Uranus
When it was discovered it was going to be called Georgium sidus but other astronauts called it Herschel but
then Johann bode suggested to use a mythological name Uranus to match the five planets called antiquity.
Neptune
leverrier wanted to name it after himself but Neptune was proposed and used by scientists.
Total
The planet names were named after Greek and roman mythology.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN A DWARF
PLANET AND A PLANET

ARE THERE
ANY OTHER
SOLAR SYSTEMS IN THE
UNIVERSE?
ARE THERE
ANY OTHER
SOLAR SYSTEMS IN THE
UNIVERSE?
 None that scientists have found but the reason for this is spotting
planets orbiting other stars is like trying to spot a mosquito next to a
brilliant search light miles away, Because planets only shine from the
reflected light of the star they orbit which isn’t much.
WHY IS THE SUN GOING
TO EXPLODE
WHY IS THE SUN GOING
TO EXPLODE
The sun will start go out in 5 billion years but a 4-5 million years
before that it will turn into a red dwarf which will reach the earth's
orbit it will cool down but it will still be way to hot to allow any life to
still live on earth
WHAT IS EARTH MADE OF ?
WHAT IS EARTH MADE OF?
 You have the inner core, then the outer core, after that there’s the mantle
and the crust
 The earths core is mostly made out of nickel and iron
 The earths mantle is made out of rock containing silicon, iron, magnesium,
aluminium, oxygen and other minerals.
 The earths crust is made out of oxygen, silicon, aluminium, iron, calcium,
sodium, potassium and magnesium.
