FRIDAY 27TH APRIL – GUEST SPEAKER: LISA NANDY MP. Born in 1979 she
was educated at Newcastle and London Universities. A member of UNITE Trade
Union she became Labour MP for Wigan in 2010. Currently she is a member of the
Education Select Committee and chairs the All Party Parliamentary Group on
International Corporate Responsibility. Lisa will speak on: ‘RESTORING
CREDIBILITY ON THE ECONOMY: HOW CAN THE LEFT BE BOTH CREDIBLE
AND FAIR?’
FRIDAY 25TH MAY – GUEST SPEAKER: PROFESSOR ALAN WHITEHEAD MP.
Alan has been MP for Southampton Test since 1997. He is the former Leader of
Southampton City Council. He was in Tony Blair’s Government Under-Secretary of
State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions. He currently serves on the
following Parliamentary Committees: Standards and Privileges, Energy and Climate
Change, Environmental Audit. Alan will speak to us on ‘WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO
THE GREENEST GOVERNMENT EVER?’
FRIDAY 29TH JUNE – GUEST SPEAKER: JEREMY CORBYN MP. Jeremy has
been MP for Islington North since 1983. A member of the Socialist Campaign
Group, supported by UNISON, he is a strong opponent of the West’s intervention in
Iraq and Afghanistan. He will speak on ‘BRITAIN IN THE WORLD’.
SATURDAY 30TH JUNE – STRAWBERRY TEA. Our fellow Fabian, Susan
Harrison, invites you to her home at 76 Woolsbridge Road, Ashley Heath, BH24 2LY
for this annual event from 3.00 pm onwards. Tickets @ £6.00 each, strictly in
advance from Marion Lock at 21 Dorset Avenue, Ferndown, BH22 8HJ (tel 01202
896984). Cheques payable in favour of Ferndown BLP (SAE please) and bookings
must be received no later than the 26th June to cater for accurate numbers coming to
the event. Offers of assistance and raffle prizes appreciated and should be made to

TUESDAY 10TH JULY MID-SUMMER TEA MEETING OF THE SOCIETY AT
WESTMINSTER. The full programme will be announced in May/June. The theme of
the meeting is entitled: “How do we change Politics? – THE Constitution, the Media
and the People”. The names of the MP/Peers leading the debate is yet to be
announced. It will start at 2.00 pm and at 4.00 pm will be followed by Tea in the
Members’ Dining Room where you will have the opportunity to meet Labour MPs and
Peers, also visit after the tea Lords/Commons plus the Terrace and Commons Shop.

FRIDAY 13TH – 15TH JULY – ‘TOLPUDDLE MARTYRS’ 178TH ANNIVERSARY
COMMEMORATION FESTIVAL – GUEST SPEAKERS INCLUDE: the Right
Honourable Tony Benn etc. UNITE are expected to issue the official programme for
this 3 day event by mid-April. If you have never been I do urge you to attend this 3
day Festival.

FRIDAY 26TH OCTOBER – GUEST SPEAKER: BRIDGET PHILLIPSON MP –
Bridget was born in 1983 and is the former Chair of the Oxford University Labour
Club. She was elected Labour & Co-operative MP for Houghton and Sunderland
South in 2010. A member of the GMB Trade Union, prior to election to Parliament
she worked for Sunderland City Council on regeneration projects and as a Woman’s
Refuge Manager for Wearside Women in Need. In her role as a member of the
Commons Home Affairs Select Committee Bridget will speak on “CRIME & JUSTICE
– THE WAY FORWARD”.
FRIDAY 30TH NOVEMBER – GUEST SPEAKER: CLARE MOODY – former Trade
Union Liaison Officer at 10 Downing Street under Premiers Tony Blair and Gordon
Brown. Clare is now based at UNITE offices in Bournemouth and is a first class
speaker. Clare will be speaking on a theme related to the European Union.
