in the science or art of Air Breathing Propulsion
 Award can be given only if a minimum of 3 nominations are active.
 Chronic problems obtaining the requisite 3 nominations and maintaining
an appropriate nomination pool.
 Nominations are only active for a total of three cycles.
 Four nominations this year

To maintain active nominations in the pipeline, we need at least TWO
additional nomination prior to October 1st.
 Each Technical Discipline Area Lead (Turbine Engine, High-Speed
Propulsion and Propulsion Integration) is asked to ensure at least one
nomination package is submitted in his Technical Discipline in a given
cycle. Other TC members are also asked to encourage nominations.
96
 Please have nominator advise Jinho Lee of “intent to nominate” as soon
as possible.
POC for 2009 – Jinho Lee
Air Breathing Propulsion Award
Selection Process
 AIAA membership not obligatory to receive award (although may
be tiebreaker)
 Selection Team now consists of 5 or 6 people as follows:
 ABPTC Chair,
 Honors & Awards Subcommittee Chair,
 Relevant Technical Discipline Area Lead(s)
 Representative of the Propellants and Combustion TC.
 If only one Technical Discipline Area is relevant, the ABPTC
Chair will appoint TC member(s) to be the 5th selection team

Gordon C. Oates Graduate Award
• The deadline for the Gordon C. Oates Graduate Award is
31 January. The award has moved to an online
submission process, which facilitates evaluating
candidates and selecting the winner.
• The new online process has encouraged self-nomination
for all available AIAA awards regardless of applicability.
Some reference letters are now not specific and cite
support only for “the AIAA award”.
• Please help publicize this award among current and
future graduate students to strengthen the pool of

ABP Best Paper Award
Awarded for the best technical paper presented in an Air Breathing
Propulsion Session at the 2007 Joint Propulsion Conference or
2008 Aerospace Sciences Conference
 AIAA provides copies of ABP session forms from both
conferences (usually significant time lag)
 Process improvement: ABP Technical Organizer forwards copies
of Session Chair Forms to Honors & Awards at end of conference.
 Session chairs at ASM are requested to nominate one paper in
their session and submit completed session chair form to DR
Reddy or AIAA before departing Aeroscience Meeting.
 2007/2008 recipient: AIAA 2008-107, “The Time-Resolved Flow within
an Unsteady Ejector” Jonathan J H Heffer, Robert J Miller and Chris
Freeman Whittle Laboratory, Department of Engineering, University of
Cambridge, United Kingdom

K-12 Education
Promote and Facilitate the education of Air Breathing Propulsion
Science and Technology
 Collate air breathing educational materials available to teachers; define
and organize a common package that has the ABP stamp; increase
awareness of these materials
 Mentorship
 Teacher Award
 Develop a table-top demo for teachers to use to illustrate ABP principles…
112
K-12 Education (Cont.)
Demo Ideas
 Hovercraft model
 Nozzle demo with compressed air source
 Schlieren/shadowgraph
 Compressed air duster can produces
shockwave visible in shadowgraph
 Balsa wood compressor power by candle /
compressed air
 Balloon powered car / compressed air powered
car – design a better nozzle aka Boy Scout
Pinewood Derby
 Jet Cat Demo – Roy Hartfield
 Work with schools and other orgs – Boy Scouts/
Girl Scouts/ Civil Air Patrol
 Candle power engine see video next page
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dZ56yNldJQ
AIAA Short Courses
Develop, produce, and administer Short Courses that are
offered to industry and academia that relate to ABP Science
and Technology Development
 Continuation of ABP Design Short Course developed by John Rockensies
(ret.) –
• We don’t want this to die as an AIAA short course (it will continue to
live as a UTSI course no matter what); right now it is still scheduled for
JPC ’09 so 1st priority is identifying new ABP lead instructor
 Facilitate new short courses by smoothing the
paperwork/roadblock/deadline path for the course lead instructors
 Work on a new Short Course will be initiated by Ian Halliwell to develop a
short course on NPSS (Numerical Propulsion System Simulator)
114
AIAA Engine Design Competition
Develop and produce RFP for AIAA Air Breathing Engine Design
Competition for Undergraduates; Provide judges for evaluation of
proposals and determine winners
 Last Year’s Results – 5 entries, 3 schools [U. of Cincinnati, Cal Poly, BYU]
1st Place: The University of Cincinnati [Apple Source]
2nd Place: Cal Poly [The Greywolf]
3rd Place: The University of Cincinnati [D3R2 - LMJ]
• Topic “An Improved Turboshaft Engine for Apache Longbow/Scout Helicopter”
 Scope of Design Competition
 IGTI collaboration – Need AIAA approval; potentially opens up more
entries including graduate competition
 Immediate Goal: Define ’09-’10 topic RFP abstract
Some other interesting initiatives
 Mentorship program
 Video of Lessons Learned” lectures/talks/panel
sessions – offer them thru our website

Committee Goal/Charter
“Facilitate high quality ABP papers
and presentations at ASM/JPC
meetings.”
Pro-active Steps
Better Papers
• Abstracts must meet AIAA minimum paper standards
• Abstracts will be reviewed by at least 2 people and
some REJECTED:
1. Poor quality
2. Poor fit/wrong topic
3. Full sessions in that topic
Improved Presentations
(i.e. minimize no-shows)
• Ensure abstract completeness
• Contact foreign authors (and authors requiring clearance)
• More invited speakers/special sessions
Infrastructure
Accountability within Committees
• Technical chairs identified each year
• Specialty sub-chairs identified each year (as desired)?
• Sub-chairs should be in contact with session chairs
Volunteers
(i.e., any TC member)
• Review abstracts
• Serve as session chairs (and return chair forms!)
• Arrange invited speakers/special sessions
