Date due = April 2nd, 2015
Purpose: give this in 1 sentence. (1 mark)
Hypothesis: give this in 1 sentence. (1 mark)
Materials: list what you used to do this lab. (2 marks)
Method: Explain what you did step by step. Start with Step 1 = …. (5 marks)
Observations: Record what you observed in this lab. (2 marks)
Interpretation questions to answer:
1. When scientists are going to design a new experiment, they often do a literature
search. This means they look at what other researchers have done to get ideas of
what to start with, successful methods used, or what does not work. You fermented
wheat flour with yeast and water in the lab.
a) Name 2 industries that use this method to make their products. (2 marks)
b) Explain 2 reasons why it might have helped you to research wheat/yeast
fermentation methods more in designing your own lab. Do NOT repeat any ideas
already mentioned. (2 marks)
2. If you are looking for accurate results, scientists feel you need to take quantitative
measurements ‘before’ and ‘after’ the method was done. Quantitative measurements
include a NUMBER. For example, distance, length, height, etc. include a number in
the measurement. Explain 2 quantitative measurements that you could have taken in
this lab. (2 marks)
3. When scientists design experiments, the first one does not work (more than 99 % of
the time). So, the scientist must analyze where the problems were and suggest
changes to the design to make the experiment work better. Suggest 5 changes you
would make to your lab to try to get better or more accurate results. Explain each. (5
marks)
4. Name 3 controlled variables you used in this lab. (3 marks) If you are unsure of
what these are, reread lesson 5.
5. What was the:
a) Independent variable? (1 mark)
b) Dependent variable? (1 mark)
Conclusion:
1. Were you able to make any conclusions in this lab? If so,what? (1 mark)
