(160 contact hrs.) Course Description: This class is an overview of the skills and knowledge necessary for the field of facials and skin care. Course Focus: The focus of this class is to give the student an overview of the skills and knowledge they will need in order to succeed in the specialization of Esthetics. Emphasis is placed upon the rules and regulations of the school, Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations, Esthetics curriculum for this discipline and the exercise of the profession. End-of-Course Outcomes: Demonstrate the theory, skills, safety and sanitation, and professional ethics of basic facials and skin care. Explain the rules and regulations of the institution, department, and state. External accreditation standard is a passing score of 70% on state licensing examination administered by Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation on the first attempt. This course is designed to assist the student in obtaining the following outcomes: A. Know the rules and regulations of the school, esthetics department, and the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation B. Know how to explore the career opportunities open to licensed estheticians. C. D. E. F. G. H. Understand the importance of the practice of personal and public hygiene. Know how to practice hygiene in the salon for self-protection and protection of the public. Understand the importance of bacteriology in the study of esthetics. Know the classifications of bacteria, pathogenic bacteria and how diseases are caused. Know the methods of sterilization and decontamination. Know how to sterilize and sanitize items and implements used in the salon. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: A. B. Identify and explain the rules and regulations of the college and the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation concerning the practices and sanitation regulations pertinent to facial specialist. Performance will be satisfactory if the student can outline the rules and regulations of the department and Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation with 100% accuracy. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of personal and public hygiene by designing a plan of action for sanitizing and sterilizing all instruments used in the lab and keeps an accurate and current log of sterilization of implements. Demonstrate understanding of bacteriology, sterilization and decontamination by describing the procedures for proper sterilization of implements. Student must pass safety and sanitation exam with 100% accuracy. Describe the equipment and supplies needed for facials including sanitation and safety requirements. Prepare and set up the treatment room for services. STATEMENT OF FOUNDATION SKILLS AND WORKPLACE COMPETENCIES (SCAN SKILLS) A study was conducted for the Department of Labor by the American Society for Training and Development which identified the seven skills United States employers want most in entry level employees. These skills are motivation to learn, basic skills, communication, teamwork, critical thinking, career development and leadership. HCCS is committed to preparing every student with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in today’s dynamic work environment. Towards this ends, the following skills will be included in this course. Testing and assessing these skills will vary according to the individual instructor. The following are examples of how these skills may be incorporated into this course. Skin care history and opportunities b. Professional image c. Sanitation and disinfection d. Infection Control e. Skin and Its Disorders and Diseases LAB WORK= Workbook assignments This class is a skill intensive, fast paced course and it requires that students attend class each day in order to complete their assigned projects. All assigned projects, collective or individual must be completed on time. MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES Students are required to purchase a facial kit as well as additional supplies during the semester as the class requires. Students will also have an opportunity to participate in additional specialized classes off campus, which may or may not incur an additional cost to the student. The student does not have the option of attending or remaining in the lab, there is not a substitute instructor available. Tests and special assignments: A research topic will be assigned and a research paper of no less than 3 double- spaced typed pages will be due. Unit exams will be done at the end of each unit of the textbook. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students are expected to attend class daily and be on time. Any students absent from class in excess of 4 days of instruction will be dropped from the course (including lecture and laboratory time). Students arriving late to class will be allowed to clock in, but the time will not be calculated (no attendance). Ten points will be deducted for the first day absent from class and 5 points for each day thereafter from the attendance grade WITHDRAWALS: It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw officially from a course to keep from receiving an "F" for the class DRESS CODE: Students in the cosmetology facial candidate program are expected to be self-motivated individuals and to stay on task at all times. Students must dress professionally and carry themselves in a manner conducive to training. Dress in accordance with the department dress code and must wear a lab coat at all times. UNIFORM AS FOLLOWS: White medical type scrubs White ¾ length professional type lab coat White shoes (nursing type) no sandals or backless shoes Hose or socks must be worn PAGERS, CELL PHONES AND RADIOS Ear plugs, cell phones, radios and lap tops are not permitted in the classroom. If you have a family emergency and are expecting a call, put your cell on vibrate and ask to leave the classroom to answer the call. Go out into the hall to answer your phone. SCHOLASTIC DISHONETY AND CLASSROOM CONDUCT: CSME 1420 Orientation to Facial Specialist Page 5 of 8 Houston Community College Cosmetology Program Facial Specialist Program Students are expected to conduct themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling the course requirements. Any student found cheating on a test, plagiarizing or in collusion will receive an "F" for the assignment and the course and will be dropped from the program. See the HCC (2011-2012) student handbook for college policy on academic dishonesty and disciplinary problems. This level of development in a students' training is crucial to their professional development and success; any student that is disruptive or disrespectful will be fines $500.00 by the HCC police, go to court and may not be allowed to complete the program here at HCC. Students may be dismissed from the program. Students on the client floor are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner. Loud boisterous conduct or refusing to serve a client will constitute grounds for dismissal from the program. Make-up policy for missed assignments or tests: There will be no make-up for missed unit exams. Make-up for a missed mid-term or final test will be permitted only if the student informs the instructor in advance. The student must make arrangements to take the missed test at least 3 days before the original test date. It should be understood that the makeup test would not be the same as the test given to the rest of the student body.
