 Identify keys of piano with letter names, including black keys
 Use “landmarks” to find the notes

Instructional Strategies/Activities:
 Use “Drawn To Keys” whiteboard interactive and pop up piano on Musictheory.net
 Label black keys on piano and hear notes
 Use MusicTheory.net lesson: “Steps and Accidentals”
 Use creative class story to remember vocab
 Vocab: whole step, half step, sharp, flat, natural, enharmonic, accidental
 Use Roll-Up Pianos to play guided exercises. Could give paper “sheet music” to play
using only letters. (roll-up pianos are quite worn… replace?)

 Use Musictheory.net exercises: keyboard note identification to play a game
 Class is split into two teams. Use paper pianos and gems for score card
 Full chance round, Speed round
 Use Roll-Up Pianos and/or keyboards to play guided exercises. Give paper “sheet
music” to play using only letters. (roll-up pianos are quite worn… replace?)

Instructional Strategies/Activities:
 Use piano to understand staff (lines and spaces each have a letter)
 C clef, G clef, F clef---the clef’s job is to assign pitch to each line/space of staff.
 Use musictheory.net lesson: the staff, clefs and ledger lines.
 Floor staff (or sidewalk chalk) with felt notes or magnets on board. Student active
involvement. Could use bean bags.
 Use Handout: “Staff, Notes and Pitches” and/or Promethean Printout
