EDCP 340: Assignment #2
Mini-Unit Plan
Final Due Date: Friday, February 14th - submitted electronically
As a culminating assignment for the course, teacher candidates will work individually to develop a plan for a mini-unit of
3 lessons that will incorporate the principles of learning, using multiple entry points, inquiry work, curricular integration
and multiple forms of assessment.
Choose a grade level and a specific math learning outcome (PLO) from the IRP and prepare a mini-unit plan with
teaching and learning opportunities that are supported by current research. You may choose to do an interdisciplinary unit and include PLO(s) from another subject area, but please remember, math must be the primary
focus of the unit.
Your unit should be based on learning outcomes from the IRP and the selection of lessons and activities should be
supported with references. Candidates are asked to use a backwards planning design (Understanding by Design)
approach to planning for this assignment.
 Use the UbD template to plan a mini-unit and a lesson plan template (your choice of template) to plan
one detailed lesson.
 The plan must include:
o Goals (PLOs, enduring understandings, essential questions, accommodating differentiation)
o Assessment strategies (of, for and as learning)
o One detailed lesson including the elements of lesson design, activities (which include a variety of
strategies and materials to meet the needs of diverse students).
o Alignment between goals, assessment and activities must be clear.
In class (Feb 7 or 14th) teacher candidates will present/teach one of their unit plan activities to a small group of
their peers who will participate in the activity and provide feedback. The size of groups and amount of time for the
presentation will be discussed in class.
The purpose of this assignment is for the teacher candidate to demonstrate knowledge of Math IRP Learning
Outcomes, fair assessment practices and activities which lead to the desired goals. The assignment provides the
opportunity for teacher candidates to demonstrate knowledge of best practices in the teaching of Math.
Evaluation of the assignment will be based on the rubric for unit planning (to be discussed in class). Anecdotal
feedback will be provided.
