Explain the following
a. OCR (Optical character Recognition)
QUESTION_TEXT
b. OMR (Optical Mark Recognition)
c. MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition)
d. Joystick
e. Smart cards
a. It is an input Device, which detects the presence of characters but also
differentiates them by their size and font [shape], to read numeric and
alphanumeric characters from pre-printed documents produced by
typewriters, printers or hand written etc. however, the early OCR’s were
designed to recognize characters that were printed in a special format
like the American National Standard OCR – A or the European OCR-B
characters.
Most OCR’ used in application such as credit card billing and reading of
pin code numbers in large post offices to sort mail, and also used in
banks, insurance companies, airlines etc.
b. These devices used as input devices, which are recognized, photo
electrically, the presence of a mark but, unlike card and paper tape
readers, the mark is detected by reflected light and not by transmitted
light. The data that is read may be transmitted directly to a computer for
processing, or may be automatically recorded on another medium such
as punched cards or magnetic media. These devices are mainly used to
check the multi answer sheets.
SCHEME OF
EVALUATION
c. MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) reader is an input device.
The method employed in this is that the documents with characters
marked in Ink are passed through a magnetic field where the ink coded
characters magnetize the reader’s head due to magnetic ink. These are
then read and recognized on the basis of the strength of current
according to the size of the magnetized area in a specific pattern. These
devices operate at speed of reading 2400 character per second and
widely used in banking application systems. These devices recognize the
typical fonts, example B- 13B and CMC-1 are commonly used.
d. Joystick: It is a similar to the tracker ball the function of joystick is to
move cursor across the width and height of the screen. It consists of a
small lever handle or a stick mounted on a rolling ball. The cursor
movement controls through software techniques, based on the lever
handle movement. The function of joystick sends the electrical signals to
the CPU for the subsequent process task, and then CPU translates these
signals and highlights the cursor movement on the screen.
e. A smart card can be considered as a portable storage device that
controls some non-volatile memory. This card contain some kind of an
encrypted key that is compared to a secrete key contained on the user’s
processor. Some smart cards have provision to allow users to enter a
personal identification number (PIN) code. The origin of smart cards can
be traced to a Frenchman named Ronald Moreno in the mid 1970s’
Smart Cards are used as interface device for the mobile digital economy.
These cards hold your cash, ID information and other important related
information. These cards are mainly used to pay the bills against the
purchases.
