The American Council on Education is the major voluntary coordinating body for U.S. higher education, with a membership of 1,700 institutions and more than 200 associations. My responsibilities expanded and changed over the years. As assistant director of the Program on Noncollegiate Sponsored Instruction, I managed this new initiative on recognizing prior learning. In 1978, my responsibilities shifted to designing and managing higher education leadership and management programs, including directing the ACE Fellows Program. From 1991 to 2010, I took on additional responsibility as architect and implementer of ACE’s international agenda. Until 2006, I also continued to Madeleine F. Major accomplishments: Designed and implemented ACE’s extensive international agenda. Raised $15 million external funding over 10 years. Among the projects developed were a $6.7 USAIDfunded project to develop the capacity of South African further education and training colleges to enhance their capacity for workforce development (2009-2010); an extensive project on strategic planning and management capacity building with 15 historically disadvantaged institutions in South Africa (1992-2001); multiple projects on developing institutional international strategies and internationalizing the curriculum; programs and publications on the nexus between the U.S. diversity agenda and internationalization. Designed and implemented a series of initiatives to strengthen institutional capacity for internationalization: the Leadership Network on International Education (program for presidents and provosts); the Internationalization Collaborative (a network of 100 institutions); the Internationalization Laboratory (an intensive engagement with a cohort of 6 to 8 institutions per year to guide them in reviewing and strengthening their internationalization goals and strategies; Global Learning for All (a foundationfunded project to hone a methodology for reviewing and planning campus internationalization.) Created a series of international meetings for U.S. presidents and their counterparts from abroad.
