TNReady, the state's new and improved TCAP test in English language arts and math, will assess the state's current academic standards in English language arts and math, not SPI's. TNReady: Goals • Provide real information about student readiness for postsecondary work. • Anchor expectations about what students need to know and be able to do at every grade level to be ready. • Provide actionable information for parents and educators to support student growth. • Prove information about our competitiveness as a state. 12 TNReady will be more engaging. • In math – students will solve multi-step problems, many without using a calculator, to show what they know. • Much like teachers already do in their classrooms, TNReady will give students a variety of new ways to show what they really know and can do. • TNReady will be given in two parts. 13 Test Design Overview • Designed to assess Tennessee’s current state standards (not the prior SPIs) • Unique blueprint for Tennessee • Builds on the work we have done for the previous three years • Anchored to what students need to know in order to be ready 14 Let’s Look at the Blueprints Blueprints 15 Blueprint Activity Small Group • Review the blueprint for your grade level or course. • Look for the following ideas: • Which standards are only assessed in either Part I or Part II? • Which standards are assessed on both Part I and Part II? • Which sections are assessed most heavily? Least? Whole Group Discussion • How will this inform or modify instructional decisions for 2015-2016? • What activities should we work to engage in to best prepare our students for success? 16 TNReady - Part I • Part I for Math will include performance tasks in grades 3 – 8. – These performance tasks will include open-ended responses and be multi-step problems that allow students to demonstrate several skills towards a practical application. • Part I of TNReady will be administered during a window that opens in early February and closes in early March. – This is the same timeframe as the current writing assessment. 17 TNReady - Part II • The second portion of TNReady will replace the current TCAP tests for math and English language arts administered in April/May. • This portion will ask students to select responses for multiple types of questions. • Performance on Part I and Part II will be combined into a single composite score for each student. 18 Math Item Types Overview There are 6 types of items in Mathematics: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Equation Graphic Multiple Choice Multiple Select Performance Tasks Technology Enhanced Items 19 Technology Enhanced These types of questions ask students to: • Move or manipulate items • Move around graphics • Complete exercises that reflect real work activities like editing a paper or graphing an equation 20 Open-Ended Questions These types of questions: • Ask students to type an answer where no choices are given and provide an openended response 21 Multiple Choice and Multiple Select Questions These type of questions: • Ask students to select the right answer either by – Selecting one correct answer from many options – Selecting multiple correct answers from many options 22 TNReady Practice Tools Item standard Sampler Each will have an Practice Test example question that reflects the design of TNReady test questions Mini practice tests will be available for both Part One and Part Two of TNReady Same platform as the actual test http://www.tn.gov/education/article/tnready-practice-tools (855) 550-2690 or support@micatime.com 23 Online Assessment • TNReady will be administered online. • This gives Tennessee students an opportunity to develop critical technology skills they need for success, while also ensuring that they do not fall behind their peers in other states where online tests are given. • We have phased in required online testing over the last four years. Many states have been testing online for 15+ years. 24 Calculator Policy • Two central beliefs: 1. Calculators are important tools for college and career readiness 2. Students must be able to demonstrate many skills without reliance on calculators • At all grade levels and in all courses, TNReady will include both calculator permitted and calculator prohibited sections • Examples of permitted and non-permitted calculators, consistent with ACT and other benchmark assessments. • Handhelds are permitted with online testing. Administration Guidelines • 2015 – 2016 TCAP Calendar 26 Administration Guidelines TNReady Draft Proposed Testing Windows • TNReady will be designed to allow schools to continue instruction even while testing. • School and instruction will need to continue as normal during the testing window to allow students to cycle through the test parts of TNReady at different points in time throughout the window. All test will be timed and each subtest is expected to take 60-90 minutes. 27 Instructional Resources • TNReady • Curriculum & Instruction - Mathematics Instructional Maps • Curriculum & Instruction Math Tasks • TN Academic Standards • TNCore Instructional Resources • TNCore Assessment Resources 28 Objectives Know: the new TNReady assessments are designed to assess true student understanding and not just basic memorization and test-taking skills • TNReady will measure student understanding of our current state standards in mathematics Understand: • How the research and strategies can be incorporated in units of instruction that prepare students for college and career • the three fundamental shifts in mathematics: focus, coherence and rigor in mathematics • that TNReady is a new way to assess students’ conceptual understanding Do: • analyze the blueprints for the TNReady assessment and develop strategies to build conceptual understanding and fluency in math • Utilize the free practice tools to assist students in becoming familiar with the testing platform • Reflection: One minute paper on post-it • Jot down your “Take-Aways” • Consider what you need to know and be able to do to successfully implement what you have learned in this session. – What is still unclear? – What professional development or additional resources do you need?
