REMINDER: UMAT2015
Year 12 students are reminded that applications to sit the UMAT2015 close on Friday 5 June
2015 at 5.00pm sharp! The UMAT2015 will be held on Wednesday 29 July 2015, and the
results will be available late September 2015. Year 11 students are reminded that they may
not sit the UMAT2015 and should they do so, their results will be cancelled and they may not
be allowed to sit the UMAT again.
Students sitting the UMAT should note that candidates who do not possess a current
passport, driver’s licence or learner’s permit are strongly recommended to apply for an
Australian Keypass or Australian Proof of Age Card as soon as possible as no other forms of
ID will be accepted. Candidates without correct identification will not be permitted to sit
UMAT2015 and will be turned away.

 ‘A Day at Melbourne’
Join us and experience a Day at Melbourne! This is a repeat event – the first was in the
April holidays! The event is designed for all Year 10 to 12 students and their families to go
and explore the Parkville campus and find out more about the range of study options
available at the university. There will be an opportunity to hear from current students
about what it is like to study at Melbourne and attend tailored sessions to learn more about
entry requirements, course structures and other opportunities available to Melbourne
students. A tour of the Southbank campus will also be included in the program for those
who wish to visit the Victorian College of the Arts.

* The University of Melbourne guarantees admission to a course when an international student achieves the required
score as listed above, has met the course prerequisites, has achieved the required grades in specified prerequisite subjects
and has satisfied the University’s English language requirements and there are still places in the course at the time of
acceptance. If a student does not meet the guaranteed score, then the application cannot be considered for entry. The
guaranteed scores apply only if no further study has been undertaken after completion of the guaranteed
entry qualification.

 Bachelor of Commerce Guarantee Continues in 2016
The Faculty of Business and Economics has confirmed that if students achieve an ATAR or
notional ATAR of 95.00 or above and satisfy the course prerequisites, they will be
guaranteed a place in the BCom in 2016. Students with an ATAR above the minimum ATAR
of 93.00 and below 95.00 may still be considered for a place in the course, depending on
demand. The course pre-requisite subjects are Units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 25 in
English/English Language/Literature or at least 30 in EAL, and at least 25 in Mathematical
Methods (CAS) or Specialist Mathematics.

 Winter School for VCE Students
Be inspired to achieve VCE excellence! The University of Melbourne will be hosting its
successful Winter School for VCE students again in 2015. This year the Faculty of Arts will be
offering a series of inspiring lectures and tutorials in three VCE subjects – literature,
Australian History and History: Revolutions and is open to students in years 10 – 12.
The program, which will be developed in consultation with VCE experts and taught by
internationally acclaimed scholars, will give students the head start they need to excel in
their VCE exams.
With registrations now being accepted and limited places available, students are
encouraged to register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

News from La Trobe University
 Aspire – Early Admissions Program
The Aspire program is aimed at recognising students who are or actively involved in the
positive impact of community service and non-academic school commitments, such as
leadership, sport or cultural activities. Applicants for this program will be assessed on these
criteria and not just ATAR scores. The assessment criteria will include –


A recommendation by the Principal (or their nominee)
A written statement where the student indicates the activities they have been involved in,
the impact these activities have had on their community, and how regularly they
participated
Types of volunteering include –




community service or community group activities
religious/cultural group activities
participating in social justice groups or a school leadership role
being involved in sport, the performing arts or charity fund-raising group activities

 Prerequisites for 2016
Prerequisites for the Bachelor of Nursing have changed for 2016. They are:
Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English
other than EAL, and at least 20 in one of biology, chemistry, health and human
development, any maths, physical education, physics or psychology.
Prerequisites for the Bachelor of Applied Science/Occupational Therapy Practice
are clarified as Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least
25 in English other than EAL; and a study score of at least 25 in one of Biology,
Chemistry, any Mathematics, Physical Education or Physics.
 La Trobe Hallmark Program
The La Trobe Hallmark Program is an elite undergraduate program for high-achieving
students. This program provides students with opportunities to work in cross-disciplinary
teams on some of the world's most pressing issues with access to and mentoring by leading
researchers. Enrichment activities, such as an international study tour, are made possible
through scholarship funds provided to all successful applicants.
All successful applicants to the Hallmark Program also receive a Hallmark Program
Scholarship valued at $10, 500 over 4 years to enable students to undertake a variety of
enrichment activities beyond the classroom including an International Study Tour; a 2-day
residential; Cross-disciplinary Projects; and an Honours year.
To be eligible, students should:
 be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or holder of an Australian permanent
resident visa, or permanent humanitarian visa
 be studying in 2015 a standard Victorian Year 12 (VCE) or standard Interstate Year 12
or IB
 have applied through VTAC for one of the specified courses and be selected into that
course
 achieve a high ATAR for VCE or equivalent in 2015

 Experience La Trobe
Experience La Trobe is designed especially for Year 10, 11 and 12 students and their parents
to get a taste of what it is like to be a university student for a day and get the inside scoop
on what really happens after high school. Students may participate in workshops of their
choice, find out about student life and also check out the Melbourne campus, including
student accommodation. Melbourne Heart Football Club will be in attendance to
showcase a skills workshop and participate in a new session ‘Professional jobs in sport’.
Experience La Trobe is a free event - with lunch and entertainment provided!

The RSPCA is now accepting applications for its Certificate II in Animal Studies, program 2
(starting in June) and program 3 (starting in July).

Delivered in partnership with Box Hill Institute this is a nationally accredited course which
provides general training for people seeking employment in the animal care industry and

Careers in Sports Medicine Evening
Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre (OPSMC) is holding its annual Careers in Sports
Medicine Evening which aims to build an awareness of the health professions involved in
caring for athletes, whether they compete for Australia or exercise for fitness. Practitioners
from each discipline will be giving short talks and the rest of the team will be available
question time. Disciplines -Sports Medicine, Nutrition, Podiatry, Psychology, Massage
Therapy, Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology.

University Experience Day is a hands-on, fun, free event, where students will be able to
participate in a range of activities related to the course area of their choice. Students will
have the opportunity to meet ACU staff and current students, mingle with other prospective
students, and get a good feel for the Melbourne or Ballarat campus.
The University Experience Day at the Melbourne Campus will take place on Monday 29
June 2015. Students can choose workshops from a range of ACU study areas, including
nursing, midwifery, business, paramedicine, education, physiotherapy, psychology, public
health, exercise science, theology and lots more!
