DIALOGUE
Thursday Reading
APK
What if no one in the world
talked anymore?

ESSENTIAL QUESTION
How does dialogue
advance the plot, show
conflict, and/or reveal
character traits?
Dialogue to show conflict
Conflict produces tension that makes the story
begin.
Tension is created by opposition between
the character or characters and internal or
external forces or conditions.
Example - Model
“Where are you going?” John asked nervously.
“To the racetrack,” Mary said, trying to figure
out whether John was too upset to let her get
away with it this time.
“Not again,” said John, wondering how they
would make that month’s rent. “We are already
maxed out on our credit cards.”
Explanation - Model
The dialogue between the two characters
shows that Mary has been losing money at the
racetrack. Through the dialogue, you can tell
that it is an on-going conflict.
Where are you going?” John asked nervously.
“To the racetrack,” Mary said, trying to figure out whether John was
too upset to let her get away with it this time.
“Not again,” said John, wondering how they would make that month’s
rent. “We are already maxed out on our credit cards.”
TAPPLE
How does the dialogue between the two
characters give more information than by
saying: Mary has been losing a lot of money at the
racetrack?
Dialogue to reveal character traits
Dialogue can be used to show some
differences in attitude between characters.
Dialogue is a wonderful way of showing
moods and emotional states.
Example without dialogue - Guided
Fern was in the kitchen when she saw her father go by
with an ax. She wondered what he was doing with it.
Her mother told her he was going to do away with a
pig that had been born too small. Fern was upset
because she didn’t think a pig should be killed just
because it was smaller than other pigs.
Charlotte’s Web
Example with dialogue - Guided
“Where’s Papa going with that ax?” said Fern to her
mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.
“Out to the hog house,” replied Mrs. Arable. “Some
pigs were born last night.”
“I don’t know why he needs an ax,” continued Fern, who was only
eight.
“Well,” said her mother, “one of the pigs is very small and weak, and
it will never amount to anything. So your father has decided to do
away with it.”
“Do away with it?” shrieked Fern. “You mean kill it? Just because
it’s smaller than the others?”
TAPPLE - Guided
How did the dialogue show the character traits of
Fern and her mother?
What was the conflict?
How does dialogue help make traits obvious in
a character?
Explanation
You can tell in the dialogue that Fern is naïve
because she doesn’t know yet that pigs are
killed. She is horrified when she finds out
(shrieked). You can also tell that her mother is
used to this type of killing and is unaffected by
it.
Dialogue to advance the Plot
Dialogue can be used to
determine where the story is
going next.


1. What will happen next in the story about John

2. What will happen next in the story about Fern?

Essential Question
How do we identify
and use reflexive
pronouns?

Model
Let’s look back at the personal
pronouns from earlier this week
 I, you, he, she, it, we, they
Each of these pronouns has a
reflexive version

Model - notes
A reflexive pronoun is a special kind
of pronoun. It is usually used when the
object of a sentence is the same as
the subject, as you will see below
 It REFLECTS back onto the subject.

Model - notes
Personal Pronoun
Reflexive Pronoun
I
myself
you (singular)
yourself
you (plural)
yourselves
he
himself
she
herself
it
itself
we
ourselves
they

TAPPLE
What is the reflexive version of “she”?
 What is the reflexive version of “you”?

Model


Reflexive pronouns are used when the subject and
object are the same.
(The object of a sentence is what is being acted
upon by the subject.)
I hurt myself.
The band call themselves “Dire Straits”.
He shot himself.
TAPPLE


What is the object of a sentence?
Complete this sentence on your
whiteboards:
You
should forgive ___________.
Model

They are used as the object of a preposition, when
the subject and the object are the same.
I bought a present for myself.
She did it by herself. (She did it alone.)
That man is talking to himself.

For, by, and to are all prepositions
Model

They are used when you want to emphasize the subject.
I'll do it myself. (No one else will help me.)
They ate all the food themselves. (No one else had
any.)

When used this way, they are called INTENSIVE
pronouns. This kind of pronoun can be easily removed
from the sentence without heavily impacting the
meaning.

How do you know who the bad
guy is in a Disney movie?

Essential Question
How does a film version of a
play use different elements to
advance the story and set
tone?

Model

When you read a play, you only
see the words on a page. You use
the information from these words
to imagine the event.
Model
However, WATCHING a play involves
more of your 5 senses.
 HEAR: dialogue, background noises,
music
 SEE: characters, props, lighting
 Tone: How the author wants you to
feel about his work.

What do you picture when you read
these lines?
MOTHER:
Sleep, my little Kovu
Let your dreams take wing
One day when you're big and strong
You will be a king
SON:
Good night...
MOTHER:
Good night, my little prince.
Tomorrow, your training intensifies.
Lullaby
What is the tone of this lullaby?
How do video elements affect the
story?

If we only read the text, we get the impression of a young
mother lovingly, and soothingly singing her young child to
sleep. However, after watching the media version of the
lullaby, we realize that the mother is an evil, conniving,
villain. The lighting in the video is very dark and the colors
resemble fire. The music is scary and we can hear lions
growling in the background. We can also see the mother’s
evil eyes and hear the hoarseness in her voice. The tone of
the video is dark and scary, almost threatening. This
drastically changes the effect the lullaby has on us as
readers because we understand that it is not as innocent
as the lyrics sound.
Guided- How do video elements affect
the story
Orange fish: Hey guys! Wait up!
Orange fish catches up to the other three fish and they all look out at the
vast ocean.
Orange fish: whoa!
All 4 fish look over the edge of the reef.
Yellow fish: Saved your life!
Pink fish: aww. You guys made me ink.
Everyone laughs.
Orange fish: what's that?
They look at an object in the distance.
