Grade breakdown: Participation Homework Quizzes Tests Final Exam Composition Oral exam 10% 10% 10% 25% 20% 10% 15% Participation (10%). Your attendance, daily preparation, and active participation in class will not only contribute to your learning, but are also important factors in determining your grade. Students are expected to participate in Spanish only during each class period. The instructor will monitor student participation on a daily basis. Speaking English during class will result in a grade of 0. Homework (10%). All online assignments from the Quia workbook must be completed as indicated on the syllabus. Homework that is incomplete or late will not be accepted. Keep in mind that the Quia online homework is always due before midnight (12:00 AM) the day the class for which it is listed on the syllabus (i.e. Homework for the first day of class should be completed the night before.) Lecturas. Students are required to complete the exercises that accompany each reading (lectura) posted on Collab, be prepared to hand them in, and to come to class prepared to actively discuss each reading selection. There will be reading quizzes. Quizzes (10%). Pop quizzes will be administered at the beginning of class. There will be two listening comprehension quizzes, pop quizzes, a quiz on the syllabus, and a geography quiz. Lateness to or absence during a quiz will result in a grade of 0. Tests (25%) and Final Exam (20%). There will be three tests and a final exam. There are no make-up exams. Spanish Department policy dictates that exams be rescheduled only if the student has an official university excuse (academic business, athletic team travel, religious holiday, death in family) and if arrangements have been made prior to the exam. Failure to attend the final exam results in an F for the course. Oral exam (15%). There will be a final oral exam at the end of the session. Students will role-play a situation in pairs. Lateness to or absence from the oral exam on the date scheduled will result in an F. Composition (10%). There will be one (1) graded composition written in class (use of a dictionary is allowed for the last ten minutes). This will be corrected by the instructor using symbols, and then rewritten by the student guided by the symbols. Composition grades are based on accuracy of grammar and vocabulary as well as content, organization, and style. The grade for the composition will be based on both the first draft and the rewritten final version, using the rubric found on Collab.Students who do not turn in a rewritten final version will receive a zero. There are no make-ups. Course Policies: The Honor Code. Spanish 2020 students are expected to comply with the UVA Honor Code. All work is to be pledged and completed by the student without assistance from classmates, advanced Spanish students, or native speakers, unless otherwise indicated by the instructor. Any violations of the Code in or outside class will be brought to the attention of the Honor Council for appropriate action. Attendance and Tardiness. Attendance is obligatory for Spanish 2020. In order for students to progress in their understanding and speaking of Spanish, they must hear and speak it on a regular basis. Department policy dictates that if a student misses more than 6 hours of classes excused or unexcused (which in the summer is equivalent to an excess of three absences), will result in a withdrawal from or failure in the course. Students are expected to arrive to class on time as being late counts as half absence. Assignment Deadlines. Assignments are due by the beginning of class as indicated on the syllabus. No late work and no make-up work will be accepted. Students who will not be in class should turn in their assignments before the due date. There are no make-ups. Your responsibility. For each credit hour, it is expected that you spend an average of 2 hours at home on homework and class preparation. You are expected to come to class having prepared the material on the syllabus for that day and ready to participate actively and intelligently in class. Class will be conducted only in Spanish. It is your responsibility to let your instructor know if you do not understand and to consult them during office hours with any questions or concerns. Please refrain from one-on-one conversations with other students except during group and pair work time. Failure to do so will result in a lowered class participation grade. NO CELL PHONES OR LAPTOPS IN CLASS. Students using a cell phone in class (i.e. text messaging) will receive a zero participation grade for the day and repeat offenders may be asked to leave the class and receive half an absence for the day. Each class meeting will have a 10 minute break. Please return on time from the break so that we can continue class in a timely manner. Department Grading Scale.
