Grants and Contracts Research Grants Not Funded-External 2008 - Resick, L., Campbell, R.J., Tamenne, B., Gross, C., & Paraska, K., "Older Adults and the Internet - Focus Group Project", Older Adults and the Internet classes were started with the intention of teaching seniors to use computers and the Internet to research their health issues and questions. The initial notion for creating this project was for seniors to become knowledgeable about health issues and make informed decisions about their care. The Older Adults and the Internet classes to date have been taught in the City of Pittsburgh senior centers, low income apartment high-rises, and libraries. Attendance has been steady, but recruitment and retention of class participants have been lower than expected. When researching the computer classes offered elsewhere in the City of Pittsburgh a trend appeared. Computer classes designed for older adults are being taught, and successfully attended. In addition, organizations sponsoring classes throughout the Pittsburgh region are charging fees as high as $135 for a class series. As all services offered through the Nurse-Managed Wellness Center the Older Adults and the Internet classes are free and focused toward the needs of vulnerable older adults. Identifying the reasons for choosing to attend and not attend computer classes will be researched. The additional needs identified by vulnerable older adults in the context of computer training classes will be researched. Duquesne University Faculty Development Grant. c.
