Technology Extension Options for Section 2
Note to teachers: You can do any or all of these options during the course of
this section. You can also assign different learners easier or more difficult
tasks, based on their technology skill level.
 You could have learners do A1 individually, rather than having them all
listen together and putting the sentences in order in pairs. Email them
the link or give them the path to find the recording at hubbs.spps.org >
Students > Class Web Pages > Using English > Citizenship >
 A2 could be emailed as an attachment and then learners could type in
their answers, rather than write them on paper. Even for Part 2, you can
show the students how to click on Insert and then click on Shapes and
choose a Circle to circle their answers in that part of the activity. They
will need to right-click to format the shape and choose No color in Fill
options. To continue using the shape, they can click Ctrl + D to duplicate
the shape and drag the shape over their intended answer. Then they
can repeat this as they go along.
 Email A3 to students and have them email the list of Q & A back to you.
 After showing learners how to create flashcards with paper, show them
how there are online flashcards, too: http://quizlet.com/2500447/civicstest-for-us-citizenship-flash-cards/
 The Quizlet website has pre-created flashcards on different topics. You
can register and created flashcards to go with any topic throughout the
school year and you can show your learners how to register/create
flashcards for themselves. What a great study tool!

Listening (A1)
Note to teachers: You can read this script, play the recording of it for your
class, or have learners listen to it individually. For instructions, it just says
“Listen to the story” so that you can either read it to them, or have them
access the recording and listen on their own.
Instructions:
 Have students cut out the sentence strips and mix them up, one set per
pair or small group.
 In pairs, or small groups, students will listen to the script and put the
mixed-up strips in order.
 When the Strips are placed in the correct order, students can answer the
comprehension questions.
Script:
In order to become a citizen, you must first pass the citizenship test. The
citizenship test will check your ability to read, write and speak English. It will
also test you on Civics. Civics is U.S. history and government. There are three
parts to the test. For the reading part, you will be asked to read three
sentences. You must read at least one correctly to pass that part of the test.
For the writing part, your test administrator will read three sentences aloud to
you and you will need to write what he/she says. You must write at least one
correctly to pass that part of the test. For the speaking and Civics part of the

Study Skills (A5)
To pass the citizenship test, you must study 100 important facts about American history
and government. That is a lot of information to remember. How will you remember it all?
How do you study for a test?
There are many different ways to study for a test. How do you study for a test? In a small
group, share the different ways you study for a test. Write down at least 3 examples from
your group.

Reading the information is one way to study for a test. However, reading is very passive.
That means that you do not do anything to actively study. Your brain will remember
information much better when you use other parts of your body and not just your eyes to
remember information. What are some ways you can study that require you to use other
parts of your body?

What way do you think you would like to actively study? __________________________
How much will you study for the test?
Another important question is how much time you will spend studying for the test. The
more time you spend, the better you will remember the information. However, you need
to plan your time carefully. You need to choose a quiet place and make sure that you can
study without interruptions. What do you think is a good study plan for preparing for the
citizenship test?
