APPETIZERS
The “Adverb-tizer”: Write three 7th grade
sentences, each containing conjunctive adverbs.
Underline the adverbs.
Red Pepper-Roasted Roots: Create a chart and
write the meaning and example words for each
of the following affixes: bio, graph, port, manu,
pedi, spec, trans, therm
Conflict Chowder: Create a chart which lists
each type of internal and external conflict. Write
the definition and give an example of each. The
example must come from a something you’ve
read.
Side DISHES
Connotation crab cakes: Make a T-Chart and
categorize the following pairs of words as having
either a positive or negative connotation.
fat – healthy
scrawny –thin
ugly-different
lazy – relaxed
thrifty - penny-pincher
unique-strange
inquisitive – nosy
cocky - confident
Parenthetical Potato Poppers: Write four
sentences using some of the following
parenthetical expressions:
I think, as well as, by the way, in fact, as a result,
as stated earlier, in my opinion
*Be sure to punctuate correctly
Deep-Fried Definitions: Look up the following
words in the dictionary and write all meanings as
well as the part of speech: apparition, haggard,
pungent, virtuoso, and pseudonym. Use each word in
a sentence. Be sure to include context clues.
Main courses
Cheese-stuffed Chatterboxes: Write a
conversation between you and your
best friend. Each person should speak
at least 4 times. Be sure to use
quotation marks correctly.
Grilled-to-Perfection Poetry: Copy
your favorite poem and label the
rhyme scheme and syllable count.
Then write a poem mimicking the
poem you chose. Your poem must be
at least 8 lines.
Cluck-Cluck Casserole: Write a
descriptive journal entry about a time
when you overcame a fear or
experienced fear. You must include at
four of the correlative conjunctions
and include specific details.
Oyster Organizing
List and define each type of text
structure (7). Then, browse books,
magazines, etc. and find examples of
at least two different types. Copy
these into your menu.
Pile-of-Pasta Pandemonium:
Write a friendly letter to upcoming 7th
graders explaining what to expect. Your
letter should include personification,
alliteration, assonance, hyperbole, and
onomatopoeia.
DESSERTS
Ironic Icecream: Define situation irony, verbal
irony, and dramatic irony. Use complete
sentences to give an example of each one.
Fabulous -Follow-Me Float: Write an
advertisement to sell something. You must
incorporate at least two persuasive techniques.
So Sweet Concoction: Write five sentences
about something you did that was sweet. Each
sentence must contain an emphatic verb and at
least 10 words.
Collective Cupcake: Make a list of collective
nouns. Explain when to use a singular verb and
when to use a plural verb. Write five sentences
with collective nouns. Be sure the verbs agree!
Drinks
Tropical Transitions: Write a paragraph explaining
how to do or make something. Use at least five
transitional words in your paragraph.
Literary Lemonade: define the following terms and
give an example of each: flashback, foreshadow,
mood, tone, theme, 1st Person Point of View (POV),
3rd person POV, 3rd person limited POV, 3rd person
omniscient POV
Mocha Milkshake Marvel: Write two compound
sentences and two compound-complex sentences.
