The access code is packaged with the book when purchased from the bookstore. An access code must be purchased if you do not purchase the book from the bookstore. This program offers math practice, tutorials, video lessons, immediate feedback and free tutoring. All students will use this program to complete the pre-test and post-test in Math 070. Students register at www.coursecompass.com using the course ID: foote94364 Pre/Post Test: A pre-test is given during the first two weeks of the course. This is required for all students taking Math 070. In addition, during the last two weeks of class, a required post-test is given. Both of these exams are found in MyMathLab. Once you register for MyMathLab, you will need to also enroll in the Pre/Post test course using the course ID: mchale51066 by adding another course. Student Communication: To access WebCT, IRIS, and your Heartland Student Email, you will need to log into myHeartland, at https://my.heartland.edu Relationship to Academic Development Programs and Transferability: MATH 070, 087, 096, 098, and 099 are designed to enhance students' academic performance for other college courses for which they are currently under prepared, as indicated by their performance on HCC's math placement exam. Credit earned from successful completion of this course (or other developmental course) is not calculated into students' HCC GPA, will not apply toward degree or certificate requirements, nor will it transfer to other colleges or universities. However, some institutions calculate admissions GPA using grades from all courses, including developmental courses. Course Objectives (Learning Outcomes): Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: Assessment Outcomes Performs addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using HW, Quiz, Test integers Understands fraction basics and can perform addition, subtraction, HW, Quiz, Test multiplication, and division with fractions and mixed numbers. Percent Method of Evaluation (Tests/Exams, Grading System): Your course grade will be determined as follows, 100-90% = A, 89-80% = B, 79-70% = C, 69-60% = D, 59-0% = F. Methods of evaluation will consist of, but are not limited to tests, quizzes, homework, and a final exam. 6 Tests 600 points (100 points each) Online Homework 100 points Worksheets 100 points Comprehensive Final Exam 200 points Total 1000 points The grade on your final exam will replace your lowest test score or online homework score, provided that your final is not your lowest score. Homework: Students are required to purchase an access code to MyMathLab where they will be required to complete weekly online homework assignments. Late work policy: Worksheets are expected to be done in class the day they are given. You are encouraged to work together with other students in the class. At the very least, compare answers with at least 1 other student to see if your answers are agreeing. If there is insufficient time to complete the worksheet in class, then it is due the next class period. Penalty may be given for late worksheets. All worksheets must be done before the test is given that covers the material, in order to get any credit for the worksheets. If you are absent, worksheets can be printed from MyMathLab (under student resources). Online homework also must be done by the day of the test when the material is covered. If you must miss a test, you are expected to contact Mrs. Foote BEFORE the test, preferably by e-mail, and explain the reason for your absence. Arrangements can be made to take the test in the testing center before the next class period. Picture ID is required. If this is not done, you can expect a zero for that test. Your worst test (or online grade) will be replaced by the percentage of your final, as long as the percentage from the final is better. This can be used to replace a missed test, if necessary. Participation (or Attendance): Regular attendance is necessary to be successful in this class. If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to obtain any class notes and assignments that they missed. Calculator: The use of the calculator will be restricted for most of the course. Incompletes: An incomplete grade may be given to a student who, by the withdrawal date, can reasonably be expected to pass the course. Incompletes may be granted only when justified by extreme circumstances (e.g., serious illness, accident, death or serious illness in the immediate family). Incomplete grades are not given for such reasons as unjustified failure to appear for the final examination. A written agreement, outline the requirements to be met, must be signed by the instructor and the student. The agreed upon requirements must be completed no later than the end of the following semester. By the agreed upon date, the instructor will assign a grade or the incomplete will be changed to an F if the requirements are not completed. Required Writing and Reading: Some instructors may incorporate writing assignments as part of the course grade, in keeping with learning outcomes. Reading assignments (other than the text) may be assigned, possibly in conjunction with writing assignments.
