Academic Advising Notes for Secondary Education
*The associate’s degrees marked with the asterisk * do not include EDU200 as part of those curriculums. These degrees are recommended to best
prepare students for their chosen major at JMU. EDU200 is required for admission into the JMU teacher education program. If EDU200 is not
completed at Germanna the student will need to complete the equivalent, EDUC300 during their first semester at JMU.
Art
Students interested in art education will need to be admitted to the University and into the School of Art Design and Art History via submissions of
an electronic portfolio with the exception of art history majors & minors and art minors. ALL majors in the School may also apply for K-12 art
teaching licensure including art and art history minors. Studio Art is offered with concentrations for the major in Ceramics, Fibers, Metals,
Painting and Drawing, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. The B.A. degree requires foreign language through the intermediate level and a
philosophy course other than those fulfilling Cluster 1 requirements. See additional information under Foreign Language note. The B.S. degree
requires a scientific literacy course beyond the general education requirements and two transferable math courses.

Foreign Language
Earth Science, English, Modern Foreign Language, History and Political Science are B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) degrees. Art History and Studio Art
majors may also be earned as a B.A. degree. The B.A. requires foreign language proficiency at the intermediate level. This can be met through
JMU’s foreign language placement test (once admitted to the university), or with credit for the 202 level of a language. Please Note: JMU does not
grant credit for the introductory levels of a language that a student has studied for two or more years in high school. Students who are proficient
or fluent in another language may elect to wait and take JMU’s foreign language placement exam.
Math
All transfer students are required to complete the JMU math placement test upon admission and before attending orientation, regardless of the
math taken at Germanna (GCC). For example, a biology transfer who takes MTH 163 and 164 or MTH166 at GCC, must test into MATH 235 (MTH
173 at Germanna) via JMU’s math placement test, even though they have credit for 163/164.
Admission to the College of Education
Once admitted and enrolled in courses at JMU, all students must apply to teacher education and be accepted before they can take the required
education courses. Conditional admission to teacher education programs requires the completion of ENG112 (must transfer to JMU as WRTC103),
a math class, PSY 230, and EDU 200 with a grade of C or better, and a passing scores on the Praxis Core Mathematics and the Virginia
Communication Literary Assessment (VCLA) test or passing scores on the Praxis Core Math, Reading, and Writing assessments (or minimum
required SAT or ACT scores), see http://www.jmu.edu/coe/esc/assessmentsadmission.shtml for more information. Students are strongly
encouraged to take and pass the Praxis Core Math and VCLA assessments or the Praxis Core Math, Reading, and Writing assessments prior to
transfer with an associate’s degree. Students cannot have any record of felony convictions or misdemeanors involving children or drugs.
Other admission requirements include a cumulative JMU GPA of at least 2.5, satisfactory completion of training modules in universal precautions
and child abuse prevention, and submission of two reference forms. These requirements should be completed by the end of a transfer student’s
first semester at JMU.
Secondary Education students take their major and education coursework concurrently during each semester of enrollment. In addition,
candidates must earn a grade of "B-" or better in all required pre-professional undergraduate courses in the education program and at least a "C-"
in content course work to continue in and complete the pre-professional program.
Graduate Program
Consult the graduate catalog for M.A.T. graduate requirements. Admission to and the satisfactory completion of the M.A.T. program are required
in order to receive a recommendation through JMU for a teaching license at the secondary school level.
