Hawai’i Cosmetology Academy Course Descriptions Page ESTHETIC COURSE DESCRIPTION Theory - 150 hours Anatomy and Physiology - 60 hours Anatomy is the study of the gross and microscopic structure of the human body and their positional relationship to one another. This includes cells, tissues, muscles, bones, organs, and the systems of the body. Physiology is the study of how the body and its individual parts function in normal body processes. It includes the study of homeostasis, metabolism, and the levels of organization. Esthetic Theory and Practice - 90 hours Esthetics begins with the understanding of appearance enhancement from ancient times, and the advancements from the 19th, 20th, through the 21st centuries. It includes the psychology of success, managing your career, goal setting, time management, ethics, personality development, and attitude. The practice of esthetics also includes communicating, consultation, and products knowledge and sales. State of Hawai’i laws regulating Cosmetology (Esthetics), Hawai’i Revised Statutes (HRS), Chapter 439, Beauty Culture and Hawai’i Administrative Rules (HAR), Title 16, Chapter 78, Cosmetology, are discussed in depth during this course. Shop Management - 50 hours Record Keeping - 10 hours This includes proper telephone etiquette, maintaining confidential appointment logs, client information forms, and treatment files. Sanitation - 30 hours This is the study of infection control principles and practices. Includes review of applicable State laws and rules including Hawai’i Administrative Rules (HAR), Title 11, Chapter 11, Sanitation, types of bacteria, types of disinfectants, cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and universal precautions. Hygiene - 10 hours Personal hygiene is the daily maintenance of cleanliness by practicing good sanitary habits. The rules of hygiene require that practitioners well groomed. It begins with looking and smelling fresh. It is a given that practitioners should shower, bathes, every day, use deodorant, etc. Theory and Practice of Massage: Manipulations and Techniques - 50 hours This core technical subject includes definitions, descriptions, and directions for the application and use of the most common massage methods and techniques. Students will learn how to design each session specifically for the individual client. Facials, Treatments, and Makeup - 350 hours Facials - 190 hours Facials shall include skin analysis, client consultation, determining skin type, skin care products, facial massage, electrotherapy, light therapy, facial treatments, and aromatherapy. Treatments: Massage Practice on the Face, Hands, Arms, Legs, Feet - 120 hours Students will learn the basic flow pattern for massaging the face, hands, arms, legs, feet. It includes the organization of various massage manipulations and techniques which follows a cohesive pattern. Makeup, Waxing - 40 hours Makeup shall include cosmetics for facial makeup, makeup color theory, basic makeup application, special-occasion makeup, corrective makeup, artificial eyelashes, and safety precautions. Hair removal (waxing) shall include client consultation, permanent hair removal, methods of temporary hair removal, and paraffin wax treatment. Page 2 of 2
