Trust Act of 1993.
 25 Members are appointed by the governor and meet quarterly across the state.
 Awards grants to local organizations enabling the establishment of AmeriCorps
and other National Service programs.
 Operating as a “point” organization for promoting and recognizing service
volunteers and by supporting quality service projects.
 Oversees the AmeriCorps program.
Since 1994, more than 250,000 men and women have served in AmeriCorps, providing
needed assistance to millions of Americans through projects ranging from tutoring, youth
mentoring, public safety, housing rehabilitation, health care, environmental issues, and

The National Preparedness and Response Corps (NPRC) is a national direct AmeriCorps
program sponsored by the American National Red Cross. The mission of the NPRC is to
provide vital emergency assistance to communities affected by disasters and increase
preparedness in the areas of greatest need before disasters strike by recruiting, training and
supporting young adults who will provide integrated community outreach and education

Members serve as a team, partnered with teachers, in grades K-8 in the inner city of St.
Louis. Teams focus on literacy and communication skills often using experiential learning
and service learning as tools. Members also address other issues i.e. – individual tutoring,

involvement, and assistance to ESL and bilingual students.

Columbia Bottom Conservation Area to strengthen impoverished North City riverside

University of Missouri of St. Louis and Urban Artists Alliance for Child Development
have partnered to form the Communication Arts Initiative (CAI), a collaborative that will
address the need for supplemental communication arts education. CAI will train
AmeriCorps Members to instruct, tutor, and mentor high school students of the school
districts as well as in the juvenile detention center by forming small learning

communities. CAI will do this through a reading literacy and writing program, based on
the Corner Pocket Curriculum.

A national, non-profit organization that engages educationally at-risk youth in a combination
of service and youth development activities. Service activities focus primarily on renovating
houses and buildings for the homeless and low-income families. Members serve directly with
community-based organizations to rehabilitate abandoned housing and build new homes for
homeless people, persons with HIV/AIDS, the physically challenged, and low-income
families. They build awareness of community issues and generate volunteers for local service
projects.

below grade level through daily one-on-one tutoring sessions focusing on skills and
strategies to break the trend of reading failure. This is an “AmeriCorps Reading Coaches”
model project that includes English as a Second Language component to help bridge the
language barrier in meaning and comprehension for the growing Hispanic population of this
community.

education. As the only food bank in Kansas City, Harvesters seeks to increase the

Kauffman Scholars, Inc (KSI) takes a three-pronged approach to helping students realize
the goal of becoming college graduates: preparation, access, and graduation. Scholars
receive extensive academic coaching in After-School, Saturday, and Summer KSI

tutoring and mentoring services at school sites in Missouri, and at the KSI Academic

It is the goal of the St. Joseph Youth Alliance and its partners to reduce substance use
and abuse among youth and to strengthen collaboration among community partners
through the development and implementation of expanded services for youth. This will
be done through blending existing prevention efforts with the developmental asset
philosophy to create an approach to community building that has the potential to
complement, strengthen, and expand substance use prevention efforts through

UMKC-IHD, along with its partners the Missouri Planning Council and local Senate Bill
40 Boards developed a multi-site program “Community Support Navigators”, the
purpose of which is to increase the productivity, independence, inclusion, and selfdetermination of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.
