HE 1 Jiaxin He Stacey Dearing English 106 16 April 2014 The Obesity Epidemic Citation: Abelson, Philip, and Donald Kennedy. "The obesity epidemic." Science 304.5676 (2004): 1413. Biography in Context. Web. 16 Apr. 2014. "About Us." Science/AAAS. Web. 16 Apr. 2014. Summary: The increasing rate of people who are obese has become a public health crisis globally. Moreover, the consequence of obesity, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, people start to realize that obesity becoming a big issue for our society. From the research conducted by National institution of health, 55% of American Adults are overweight of obese. However, this is not only about the United States, obesity has developed into a concern for people all over the world. Rhetorical Situation: I think this article’s audience would be scholars and people who care about their weight issues. This article is a journal from Science magazine, and this magazine is famous for its high standard of peer review and editorial quality. Moreover, the publisher AAAS is the world’s largest general science society (science). So I Think most scholars will love to read article from Science. HE 2 The purpose of this article is to raise the awareness among people that we should really concern about obesity as a global issue that will jeopardize our health condition. We should really take the action and fix the problem. The genre of this article is proposal. Firstly, the author identifies the problem of obesity. Then the author offers solution to fix it. So this is a clear proposal structure The stance of this article is objected, the author states the view from both side. The author believe the cause of obesity could be biochemical and behavioral. When the author presents the view from each side, the author try to not add his own opinion in the paper. So it makes the paper look professional, and scholarly The author used pathos and logos in this paper. By using this source, it adds credibility to the author. It also makes audience easy to accept the concept the author tries to convey in this paper. In First paragraph in the article the author used pathos “it concerns being overweight and the adverse health consequences of obesity, which include diabetes, heart disease, and cancer”(Abelson 1). By giving examples of the consequence of obesity, the author successfully scared people, and make people realized how bad it could be when you are obese or over weight. Another method the author used a lot is the logos, in the second paragraph of the paper “the world Health Organization is deeply concerned about the issue, recognizing that nearly 1 billion adults are overweight and at least 300 million are obese”(Abelson1). All this data supports the authors thesis statement that how obesity is widespread to the world. Analyze the Research: HE 3 The major research method the author used is the secondary research. From reading through this article, I don’t think the authors did any primary research. In addition, the author has mix feeling about most of the option that his peer had in the paper. In the fourth paragraph the author state, “ well, behavioral modification may be the solution for some, but for others the issue may be biochemical”(Abelson 2). From this sentence we can know that the author agree about obese could be caused by the unhealthy lifestyle, but the author also thinks it is not one hundred percent true. Because of obese could be genetic. The author cited information from several source including, the World Health, and department of Health and Human service in the second paragraph of the paper. From the recourse that the author uses, it shows it is a scholarly paper, because both of these two sources are reliable. The citation method the author used in the paper is APA format. The only in text citation I could find is from third paragraph. So from that I believe this is an APA format in text citation. I didn’t find any source citation, so it is hard for me to tell what kind of citation method the author used in the article.
