Why do people want to immigrate to the United States?
The world has changed since World War II. The United States has replaced the United
Kingdom and became number one in the world. Some people say that the United States became
superpower, this is because the U.S. made a lot of money selling weapons to other countries
during the World War II. Some people say that because the battle did not take place in the U.S.
during the two world wars, therefore the U.S. didn’t get any damage. However, the most
important factor that I would say is immigration. There is a poem under the Liberty of Statue,
“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched
refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside
the golden door!" (Lazarus). This means that the United States welcomes people all around the
world.
One of the reasons that the U.S. became superpower is because a lot of scientists
immigrate to America during the World War II. Like Albert Einstein, because of his Jewish
identity, he was forced to leave Europe and went to the United State. After that more and more
scientist came to the U.S. This is also the key point why the United States developing so fast
after World War II.
Now, most profession fields in the U.S. are in the top of the world. The United States is the
first choice for the people who want to migrate to a different country. There is no need to think
or hesitate to decide where to go, because the U.S is the most advanced country, its passport has
priority, its education is excellent, its land is tremendous and its economy is the number one in
the world.
Immigrating to the United States is not an easy thing now, except for the people who have a
special skill, like someone with a doctor degree or someone who is very rich. If the immigrant
does not have any skill, it will be very difficult to immigrate. There are still some Chinese people
who are willing to pay a lot of money to migrate to the United States just to get a green card.
Because they want to have an American passport that visa free for many countries. Having a
United States passport is really good for businessman, because they don't need to apply for a visa
and save lots of time. In contrast, at present even with a Chinese passport, Chinese people need
to apply for a visa even to go to Hong Kong or Macao. Except for the visa application fee and
waiting time, people also need to prepare for an invitation letter, economic proof and so on.
Sometimes people need to buy tickets and make hotel reservation before get the visa. If people
failed, can't get the visa, a series of trouble will come. People need to change the tickets and
hotel reservation. Sometimes it also will negative effect on their business. In the 20th century,
world communication is become more and more frequent. The earth is like a small village. Who
doesn’t want to have a passport that can go anywhere freely? If the people who can get an
American passport, he or she can have this priority.
Because of the U.S education system, a large number of people immigrate to the U.S. “In the
rank of the 100 best Universities in the world, 32 of the world’s best universities are in the
United States.”(2011 Rankings). It's been proved that America was an advanced education
system. In the early 19th century, many people came to the U.S to study. “Xu Zhimo, a Chinese
famous poet, who went to the United States in 1919 and studied in Columbia University.” (Wiki
Xu). “Deng Jiaxian was a Chinese nuclear physics expert, he was granted a doctorate in physics
from Purdue University in 1950. After he granted, he returned to China. He was the key
contributor to the Chinese nuclear weapons.” (Wiki Jiaxian Deng). “Qian Xuesen was named
"Father of Chinese Rocketry." He was studied in MIT and California Institute of Technology.”
(Wiki Qian). American university has cultivated many smart people. Now, America’s high
education is the reason why people like to immigrate to the U.S.
The United States is a tremendous land. At the west is the Pacific Ocean. At the east is
Atlantic Ocean and at the south is the Mexican Gulf. “The United States is one of the biggest
countries in the world and the local area is 9.83 million square kilometers.” (Wiki, United States).
The Pacific and Atlantic becomes a natural barrier for the U.S, so America didn't get big damage
during World War I and World War II. The United States has rich natural resources; reserves of
mine, oil, coal, natural gas and forest resources are all in the top of the world. American has
strong environmental awareness, they put paper, bottles and other trash in different trash can. So
all things let America becomes a good place for people living and working.
Because of the 2007 American subprime mortgage crisis, global economic crisis happened
in 2008. Thousands of companies went bankrupt and a lot of people lost their jobs. Although
global economies were not good in recent years, the United States is still the richest country in
the world today. “In 2010, American GDP is number one 14.62 trillion, China is number two
5.745 trillion, Japan is number three 5.391 trillion and German is number four 3.306 trillion,
South Africa’s GDP is 354.4 billion and even some countries don’t have GDP data, because they
are too poor.” (CIA, Table). The gap between first place and second place is so huge, because the
U.S GDP is almost 9 trillion more than China GDP, but compare the second place and the third
place, China GDP is only 0.4 trillion more than Japan, the difference are not that huge. That is
why the United States is not only a great power but also a superpower.
The United States is like a huge lab and every country’s smartest people are willing to come
to this lab to do their research. So the United States become the superpower. And also because of
those reasons, more and more people are willing to migrate to the United States.
