Description
ACTUAL JOB TITLE : PRINCIPAL ENGINEER
(Subject Matter Expert and 3rd tier support)
The PMTS will be responsible for acting as a subject matter expert who provides technical leadership and training
with regard to the Content based Core Data Applications in the Maintenance Engineering organization. Individual
will be responsible for supporting and driving first office application, commercial deployment and continued
maintenance to a variety of teams that include Area/Regional Operations, Network Implementation, Product
Development, HQ/Area Network Planning, National Network Operations, Information Technology, Revenue
Assurance, and other Maintenance Engineering groups in order to fulfill complex business requirements.
(Roadmap, Lab and FOA)
The PMTS will be engaged in planning, design, equipment selection, staging, testing, and integration of new
system hardware and software. The engineer will work with the vendor to develop and implement product
roadmaps which improve the product performance, functionality and program profitability for the client. The
engineer will support Client Product. Development teams in the submission of requests for new product
functionality. The engineer will actively manage Client and vendor lab environments in which they will test and
refine new hardware/software before approval for installation in the production environment. The engineer will lead
operational teams in the FOA process for the first installation of new hardware/software.
(Design consistency, standardization and reliability)
The PMTS will create and publish functional and technical requirements. The engineer will analyze
hardware/software design, features and enhancements in order to develop test plans which effectively confirm the
successful deployment and operation of the product. The engineer will fully understand system architectures,
system operations, end-to-end designs and device-system interactions in order to develop troubleshooting guides
to be used by all other Network organizations.
(Outage management)
The PMTS will provide outage resolution oversight. The engineer will act as the central Client escalation/support
contact to NRB, NOCC, customer service, national/regional operations and performance teams when major
outages occur. The engineer will collect, identify and evaluate data relating to system problems that impact
application performance and efficiency. The engineer will analyze system failures and develop short- as well as
long-term solutions to address each. The engineer will be responsible for vendor escalation to ensure minimum
outage duration. The engineer will need to be able to work with multiple vendors across multiple platforms to
achieve system stability. In the event that executive leadership needs to be involved Maintenance Engineering
management will be brought in as a point of further escalation.
(Administrative management)
The PMTS will provide administrative management of the monitored products. This management requires the
engineer to negotiate Service Level Agreements, Statements of Work and General Purchasing Agreements. The
engineer will review vendor performance regularly in order to ensure technical compliance with agreements. When
necessary the engineer will be involved in the collection of penalties from the vendor for non-compliance. The
engineer will be challenged to minimize the cost of all new capital purchases as well as actively reduce existing
vendor expense costs "year over year".
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or any other related discipline (NO
EXCEPTION)
- Strong understanding of the OSI Interconnect model and how it relates to the design and deployment of
structured networks required
- Strong network design, configuration and troubleshooting skills required
- Strong background in application integration and vendor management
- Experienced and knowledgeable in blade server technologies and load balancers
- Background in Content caching, TCP optimization and Video optimization in service provider network is preferred
- Strong project management skills required
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral)
- Strong presentation skills
- Good Visio skills is required
