BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES - SCHOOL OF NURSING ADVANCED PLACEMENT OPTION FOR LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSES SEEKING A BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN NURSING Boise State University’s Advanced Placement Option provides an opportunity for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to complete a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. Faculty advisors are available to assist interested LPNs in meeting educational goals. REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE INTO THE NURSING PROGRAM IF YOU ARE APPLYING FOR FALL, 2012 OR SPRING, 2013 1. Consult with an Advanced Placement faculty advisor. Call (208) 426-3733 to make an appointment. 2. Have a current Practical Nurse License in good standing. If license is restricted or not in good standing, further documentation may be required. 3. Be eligible for acceptance into Boise State University. 4. Complete the following required nursing support courses with a combined GPA of 3.0 or higher: a. BIOL 227 Anatomy and Physiology (4 cr) b. BIOL 228 Anatomy and Physiology (4 cr) c. One semester of chemistry (4 cr) d. MATH 254 Statistics (4 cr) The following required nursing support courses must be completed with a “C” or better (“C-“ is not acceptable) before an application is submitted. These courses are not included in the GPA calculation for admission: a. COMM 101 Speech Communication (3 cr) or COMM 112 Reasoned Discourse (3 cr) b. ENGL 101 English Composition (3 cr) c. ENGL 102 English Composition (3 cr) d. HLTHST 207 Nutrition (3 cr) e. PSYCH 101 General Psychology (3 cr) f. SOC 101, 102 or 230 (3 cr) The applicant must complete and return the application form with a non-refundable application fee (money order only) for the Nursing Program by October 1 or March 1. Applications may be obtained on-line. SELECTION PROCESS: 1. The Admission and Progression Team in the School of Nursing will review all completed applications. 2. Selection for admission will be based on a GPA for BIOL 227, BIOL 228, Math 254 or higher and 1 semester of chemistry/lab. Only GPAs of 3.0 or higher will be considered. 3. At least 3 grades are required to determine the GPA. If BIO 227 is listed as a pass/fail course only BIOL 228, 1 semester of chemistry with a lab and Math 254 will be used to calculate the GPA. 4. LPN applicants will be included in the general application pool along with all other applicants. 5. Applicants will be selected according to the rank order of their GPA combined with their score on the essay questions. Applicants will be notified of admission by mail. Prior to beginning Semester 4 of the curriculum, applicants must complete: 1. BIOL 205 Intro to Microbiology 2. IV Certification. If an IV Certification Class is taken other than at the Center for Workforce Training at Boise State, the course must meet the Idaho State Board of Nursing criteria. For graduation, the student must complete University Bachelor of Science CORE requirements. It is highly recommended students take CORE requirements either before entering the Program or in Semesters 1, 2, 3 or 7. ACCEPTANCE INTO THE NURSING PROGRAM: 1. Upon acceptance into the Nursing Program, register ONLY for the following Semester 4 courses: NURS 226 Introduction to Professional Nursing (3 cr) NURS 228/229 Health Assessment (3 cr/1 cr) HLTHST 300 Pathophysiology (4 cr) NURS 230 if you have not had a prior Dosage Calculation for Nurses course Upon successful completion of Semester 4 courses credit will be given for the following nursing courses by credit for prior learning, which has a fee attached: NURS 105 Interdisciplinary Patient Care Skills (2 cr ) NURS 230 Dosage and Calculations for Nurses (1 cr) (unless taken in Semester 4) NURS 232/233 Foundations of Nursing Care (3 cr/1 cr) 2. LPNs may receive additional credit for required nursing courses in Semesters 5, 6, 7, 8 by: Academic transfer Challenge exam for general education courses (CLEP) Correspondence course(s) Portfolio demonstrating credit for prior learning.
