HONOR YOUR PARENTS
(Exodus 20:12)
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy
God giveth thee.
(Love of Mom)
I cannot speak to your parents, but as I think of my own, I remember their consistent love,
provision, protection, discipline and reward. They were as godly in their treatment to me as any
parent could have been. I did not always agree with their decisions, involving me, but they never
knew. You see, until I was on my own, they were the source of my provision, the power of my
protection, the ones who loved me, in spite of me. This was all of courser because of the
importance of God in their life. When I was grown, they prayed for me when I was in combat,
supported me when I tried new adventures in life, assisted in my ministry and always encouraged
my wife and I. Now that I am old, my father has gone home to be with Jesus, but my dear little
mother is still there to encourage me. Instead of mom taking me shopping and paying for my needs
I assist with my sisters in her needs. Instead of me looking for her input in decision making, she
looks for mine. She still expects me to check in, call when I get home after leaving her house and it
pulls at my heart when we drive away from her house, as she stands at the window to give that
last wave goodbye.

THE COMMAND TO HONOR.
(Exodus 20:12; Proverbs 1:5-9; Proverbs 23:22)
A.
Part of the Basic Mosaic Law. (Exodus 20:12)
1.
According Exodus 20:12 "Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may
be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee."
2.
God gave 10 basic commandments through the Mosaic Law, this was one of
them.
3.
There was an important reason for this, parents are charged with the
responsibility to bare and raise children.
4.
Children are charged with honoring and being obedient to their parents, when
everyone does their job, God will bless.
B.
Part of the Process of Wisdom. (Proverbs 1:5-9)
1.
According to Proverbs 1:5-9, "A wise man will hear, and will increase learning;
and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: To understand a
proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom
and instruction. My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the
law of thy mother: For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and
chains about thy neck."
2.
Wisdom comes from learning and experience, beginning with a right
relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
3.
4.
C.
II.
Wise people will become wiser and foolish people will become more foolish in
their life and decision making.
Part of this process is the training and upbringing by the parents that God has
blessed you with.
Part of the Process of Life. (Proverbs 23:22)
1.
According to Proverbs 23:22, "Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and
despise not thy mother when she is old."
2.
In many statements of the proverbs the encouragement to listen to and be
obedient to the parent is found, perhaps due to the tendency of children going
in the opposite direction.
3.
In this particular verse the specific implication is even when they become old,
they still need to be heeded.
4.
In the case of mom she usually will live the longest and needs to be continued to
be treated with respect.
THE CRITICAL NEED TO HONOR.
(Ephesians 6:1-3; Proverbs 4:3-10; Proverbs 10:1)
A.
The Seat of Learning (Ephesians 6:1-3)
1.
According to Ephesians 6:1-3, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this
is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with
promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the
earth."
2.
Children are commanded to be in obedience to their parents because God said
it is right.
3.
The next part of the commandment is to honor Mother and Father, which is the
first commandment with a promise.
4.
What was the promise, it is a life and death situation, that it might be well and
that you would live long.
B.
The Sharing of Wisdom. (Proverbs 4:3-10)
1.
According to Proverbs 4:3-10, "For I was my father's son, tender and only
beloved in the sight of my mother. He taught me also, and said unto me, Let
thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. Get wisdom,
get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.
Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting
get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee
to honour, when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an
ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee. Hear, O my son,
and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many."
2.
Wisdom is passed down from father to son and son to son, the wisdom of live is
passed down, father and son, mother and daughter.
3.
The teachings of the parents helps to bring to pass the foundations of life, when
built upon the wisdom of God.
4.
Benefits and blessings shall come from hearing, and applying those truths to
our life.
C.
III.
The Shame or Joy. (Proverbs 10:1)
1.
According to Proverbs 10:1, "The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a
glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother."
2.
The wise child makes a glad father, there is great correct pride in a child that will
use wisdom in their day to day life.
3.
We also see here that a foolish child brings a broken heart to their mother, for
mom always wants best.
4.
As we take a look at our life and consider our ways, do we bring gladness or do
we bring heaviness?
THE CARE REQUIRED BY GOD.
(Proverbs 31:28; I Timothy 5:3, 4, 8; Matthew 15:4-9)
A.
Respecting Mom for What She has done. (Proverbs 31:28)
1.
According to Proverbs 31:28, "Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her
husband also, and he praiseth her."
2.
The mother the virtuous women according to God's word receives a deserved
honor by her children.
3.
The children stand up and are counted among those that give praise, and the
call her blessed.
4.
Her husband also will stand up and be counted as those who praise her, for
being the faithful spouse and mother of his children.
B.
Requiting or Returning the Care. (1Timothy 5:3, 4, 8)
1.
According to 1 Timothy 5:3, 4, 8, "Honour widows that are widows indeed. But
if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at
home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before
God. But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own
house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel."
2.
We are to take care of widows as a church but first it is important that we take
care of our own mothers, grandmothers and so forth.
3.
This is not a suggestion but an expectation according to the word of God and
the care for our family.
4.
A person who would neglect his own is worse than a person who does not know
and worship God.
C.
Reflecting the real heart condition. (Matthew 15:4-9)
1.
According to Matthew 15:4-9, "For God commanded, saying, Honour thy
father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the
death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift,
by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or
his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of
none effect by your tradition. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you,
saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth
me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship
me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men."
2.
Trying to find any excuse for not taking care of the parents is observed by God.
3.
They are empty in their spirituality and being measured have come up wanting.
