Admissions Process
Note: This program is pending MHEC approval. Applications will
not be accepted until formal program approval.
To address the dramatically changing landscape
of education in the 21st century, which includes
advances in technology, in new research on the
science of learning, and in the emergence of a
private education sector, the JHU School of
Education has established an innovative and
dynamic distance education option for its
existing Doctor of Education (EdD) degree
program.
The distance education option is designed to
prepare an exceptional corps of educational
leaders, both nationally and internationally, who
can set a high standard for leadership in
education and are equipped to meet the myriad
challenges associated with improving K-12
learning outcomes in both public and private
educational environments.
Program requirements include a minimum of
90 graduate credits beyond the bachelor’s
degree.
• Of these, 36 credit hours of prior coursework at
the master’s level may be accepted as transfer
credits from another institution
• A minimum of 54 credits must be completed at
JHU
Coursework will include the
follow components:
 Science of Learning (12 credits)
 Educational Organizations,
Contexts, and Systems (12
credits)
 Applied Research and
Evaluation (9 credits)
 Specialization area (12 credits)
 Applied Dissertation (9 credits)
 For the first cohort beginning
Fall 2013, students will have
the option of three
specialization areas:
 Entrepreneurial Leadership in
Education
 Mind, Brain and Teaching
 Online Teaching and Learning
Anticipated Areas of
Specialization:
 Special Education
 Counselor Education
 21st Century Educator
• In addition to successfully completing all
coursework requirements, candidates
must also satisfy the following program
benchmarks:
• Comprehensive Assessments of
Competencies within Problem of
Practice Projects and Oral Defense
• Applied Dissertation Proposal and Oral
Defense
• The assessments are in the form of projects
completed during the summers following Years
1 and 2.
• Students will demonstrate mastery of
competencies in these written and oral
comprehensive assessments, which will serve
as indicators of readiness for conducting
applied research.
The applied dissertation is the final and most
significant requirement for the EdD degree.
Characteristics of the applied dissertation that
make it unique to this program include:
• Culmination of independently completed, but closely
interrelated, projects.
• Projects are embedded within coursework and distributed
across three years.
• Projects focus on a problem of practice within the organization
with which the candidate is affiliated.
• Projects possess potential for significant change or impact
within the organization or have implications for policy.
The program includes two on-campus
residencies. The first at the end of the first
year (may be completed electronically from
a distance). The second at the end of the
third year, which will serve as the program’s
culmination during which students will
defend their dissertation orally.
These residencies will allow face-to-face
interactions with faculty and other students,
as well as time for the oral defense and
other activities related to the applied
dissertation.
