Digital Literacy
Students will develop the touch system of keying with emphasis on the development of
proper keyboarding techniques. The student applies rules for proofreading, editing,
word division, capitalization, and punctuation for producing mail-able letters, tabulated
information, reports, databases, spreadsheets and presentations using MS Office 2010
to create these documents. Language arts skills will be applied through composition and
editing of documents for business and personal use. Leadership development will be
provided through FBLA. Students may have the opportunity to take the IC3 industry
certification test.
This course counts as the required computer credit for graduation.

Computer Literacy
This course will fulfill the digital literacy requirement for graduation. The course will be
offered via Skype. It is intended for students wanting to pursue a career pathway in
Computer Programming. Students completing this course will be expected to finish the
program by taking C++ Programing and JavaScript Programming as an upperclassman.

This course provides students with an overview of the JavaScript scripting language.
Includes coding, testing, and debugging JavaScript programs; using variables,
operators, and data types; creating dynamic web pages using JavaScript; controlling the
behavior of forms, buttons, and text elements; and using control structures, pattern
matching, objects, and application scripts.
This course will be offered via Skype.

Digital Literacy II (Block)
As an extension of Computer and Technology Applications, students will have the
opportunity to increase their computer skills. Advanced functions and integration of
Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access will be taught. Students will work toward
MOS/MCAS Certification in one or more of those Microsoft programs. In addition,
students will utilize the Internet access to complete various projects. Leadership and
development will be provided through FBLA.

Web Page Design
Students analyze the structure of the worldwide web, apply basic principles of web
documents and HTML, and develop multi-media webpages. Course content will include
cameras, and sound recording devices will be utilized through hands-on instruction.

This hands-on course applies publishing and presentation concepts through the
development of sophisticated business documents and projects. These documents
include, but are not limited to, tri-fold brochures, manuscripts, reports, bi-fold programs,
catalogs, newsletters, flyers, business forms, graphs, web pages, animations,
manipulated/enhanced photos, on-screen presentations, and video productions.
Equipment such as scanners, digital cameras, video cameras, and color laser printers,
may be utilized in creating the documents. Formatting, editing, page layout, and design
concepts are taught. Distribution ready publication standards are applied to all projects.
Software may include: Adobe Web Collection (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Fireworks,
Indesign, Premier), Corel Draw, MS Front Page, MS Office, MS Web Expressions,
Hypercam, etc. Ethics, copyright issues and fair use in projects will be reviewed and
utilized. Students will develop communication skills, problem-solving techniques,
cooperative learning, and interpersonal skills. Leadership development will be provided

through FBLA and STLP. Students are encouraged to enter projects in FBLA and STLP
events.
This course earns a credit at KCTCS.

Advanced Multimedia & Graphic Design (Block)

Pre-Requisite: Multimedia Publishing and Teacher Recommendation
This course will center around the goals of the student and consist of several
components including: web design, video production, advanced photo editing and
graphic design. Students will complete a variety of projects which may include projects
to be submitted to various competitive events including STLP and FBLA. This hands-on
course applies advanced web design, publishing and presentation concepts through the
development of sophisticated documents and projects which includes, but is not limited
to: web editing, webcasts, and video editing. Software may include: Adobe Photoshop,
InDesign, Premier, Illustrator, ImageReady, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash; Microsoft
FrontPage, Microsoft Web Expressions, Corel Draw, Microsoft Office, iLife, Final Cut
Express, etc. Peripherals such as scanners, digital cameras, web cams, video cameras,
clipart and photo libraries, music CDs and libraries, and Internet sources may be utilized
in creating the documents, presentations, and productions. Formatting, editing, page
layout and design concepts are reviewed and reinforced. The mailable or usable copy
standard is applied to all projects. Students will develop communication skills, problem
solving techniques, cooperative learning, and interpersonal skills. Ethics, copyright
issues and fair use in projects will be reviewed and utilized. Students must also be able
to work independently with the teacher as a facilitator. Leadership development will be
provided through FBLA and STLP.

This course establishes basic foundations for further study in business and marketing
courses and provided essential information for making financial and economic
decisions. Students learn about the fundamentals of the American free enterprise
system and world economics; application of sound money management for personal
and family finances; credit management; consumer rights and responsibilities; forms of
business ownership; risk and insurance; and the importance of international trade.
Leadership development will be provided through FBLA and/or DECA.

Personal Finance
This course is a self-paced online course where students will learn about real-world
topics including, income, money management, and credit, as well as saving and
investing. Students will have the opportunity to explore concepts such as budgeting;
checking and savings accounts; and investment options. The course also teaches
sound practices in the areas of finance, debt, risk management, taxes and credit
management.

Business Law
This course develops an understanding of legal rights and responsibilities in personal
law and business law with applications applied to everyday roles as consumers,
citizens, and workers. The student will have an understanding of the American legal
system, courts/court procedure, criminal justice system, torts, the civil justice system,
oral and written contracts, sales contracts, warranties, and consumer protection. Legal
terminology is emphasized. Leadership development will be provided through FBLA.

Accounting I
The accounting principles taught in this course include an in-depth study of accounting
principles, procedures, and techniques used in keeping financial records for sole
proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations. There is an emphasis on automated
accounting. Topics include a more analytical approach to accounting. Leadership
development will be provided through FBLA. This advanced accounting course
combines both managerial and financial accounting concepts. Curriculum is provided
through college accounting resources. College credit is available when students pass
the final exam.
This class may count toward the fourth math requirement for the Scholastic Diploma.

Advanced Accounting

Pre-Requisite: Accounting I or Teacher Recommendations
College Accounting uses an integrated approach to teach accounting. Students first
learn how businesses plan for and evaluate their operating, financing, and investing
decisions and then how accounting systems gather and provide data to internal and
external decisions makers. This year-long course covers all the learning objectives of a
traditional college level financial accounting course, plus those from a managerial
accounting course. Topics include an introduction to accounting, accounting information
systems, time value of money, and accounting for merchandising firms, sales and
receivables, fixed assets, debt and equity. Other topics include statement of cash flows,
financial ratios, cost-volume profit analysis and variance analysis.

Business Management
Business Management emphasizes owner-manager skills for developing the most
efficient use of time, personnel, facilities, and financial resources. Pupils are taught the
need for effective planning, organizing, leading and controlling by the successful ownermanager. Areas of study include: types of business ownership; relationship of a
business to the community (both social and legal); business responsibility to
government through taxes and government regulations; typical business organization
structure; the position of the owner/manager; product service and their promotion in

business; effective communications; human and labor relations; and effective
management strategies used in personnel, finance, production, marketing, and
information processing. All students will complete a business plan for a business of their
choosing as a culminating project.
This course is recommended for those students who wish to pursue a career in
management or entrepreneurship.
MIS 901-005 & MIS 901-005s Experience-Based Work (formerly Career Work
Experience)
Grade Level: 12
Credits: 1-2
Pre-Requisite: Students must meet all requirements listed on the contract. The
contract must be turned in with all other registration materials. See Mrs. Whittinghill for
a contract.
Work based experience provides an opportunity for students to work with a team
consisting of a school advisor and potential employer to develop and improve on skills
necessary to be successful in the workforce. The skills that are explored include job
search, interviewing, job shadowing, communication skills, professionalism and working
as a team. Career advising in an important element of this course and should take place
in a real world context. The course may involve academic projects aligned to skills
applied at the workplace.
Students must complete an application, meet GPA and attendance requirements, have
a job that is related to the student's career goals as verified with the ILP.
