Course Description:
Catalog Course Description Study of interaction of individuals, households, and firms in
making production, consumption, and distribution decisions with their attendant social
consequences. The relationship of consumer behavior to demand, and firm behavior to
supply, in capitalistic and mixed-market systems, is overlaid
Course Goals:
1. Students will demonstrate knowledge of basic economic analysis
2. Understand the market system that operates between consumers & firms, including
the Elasticity of Demand & Supply, the Consumer’s Utility analysis and the Firm’s cost &
profit analysis.
3. Distinguish between different market structures and the pricing involved in each of:
perfect competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition and oligopoly
4. Describe the different resource markets and interpret the demand & supply of those
markets including Labor markets, Capital markets & Financial markets.
5. Explain the role of government in the economy with regards to Economic regulation,
antitrust policy, providing public goods & their role in market failures.
6. Understand the issues in International trade including specialization, trade
restrictions, welfare loss, and the arguments for & against trade restrictions.
Course Requirements: One Class Project Due the 14th week of school
Grading Criteria: Homework-Questions for Review-approximately 20 points each X 10=200
In Class Problems(Problems and Exercises 10-20 points for each chapter-approx. 10
assignments-approx. 150 points
Project 100 points-The Stock Market Game
Quizzes 10-25 points –Approx. 10 quizzes-approx 150 points
Tests 100 points each X 3=300
Final Exam 150 points

General Information:
All assignments, with the exception of in-class exercises and homework, will be typewritten or
word-processed. Accuracy in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and syntax is expected of students
in this class.
Disruption of the classroom learning environment, including but not limited to unauthorized
classroom entry, making loud or distracting noises, persisting in speaking without being
recognized, inappropriate online discussion board remarks, or resorting to physical threats,
constitutes grounds for the student being dismissed from class.
